About the role

Under the general supervision of the Health Officer, this position performs professional library and information management services to support the mission of Lewis and Clark Public Health. The librarian strengthens internal processes for organizing, managing, sharing, and archiving information resources; enhances staff capacity to effectively communicate and engage with the community through accessible and reliable information; and applies best practices and current research to support evidence-informed decision-making and improve public health service delivery. This is a one-year temporary position funded by the Sewell Family Foundation.

Who We Are

Public Health is your Health! Most people don't understand what public health is or how it impacts their daily lives. The "This is Public Health" campaign was designed by the Association of Schools of Public Health to let people know that public health affects them on a daily basis and that we are only as healthy as the world we live in.

Our mission is to improve and protect the health of all Lewis and Clark County residents.

Responsibilities

• Establish staff-informed procedures to improve internal communication using SharePoint and Teams;
• Create a records retention policy to outline how the department archives and organizes physical and electronic materials;
• Research and design a system for maintaining and updating community medical and social service provider lists for improved outreach;
• Assist with updating public health educational materials based on Web Content Accessibility Guidelines;
• Research how county residents seek health information;
• Foster partnerships with the local libraries;
• Research medical libraries and how public health might provide a similar service;
• Create a system for sharing with staff best practice research to improve their work;
• Assist with community outreach and projects;
• Perform duties and responsibilities in a culturally sensitive and appropriate manner;
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

The knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences.

• State and County regulations, County policies and procedures, and Public Health Department policies and procedures;
• Community health and human services resources;
• Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources;
• Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems;
• Maintaining databases, mailing lists, telephone networks, and other information to facilitate the functioning of health education programs;
• Preparing and distributing health education materials.

Skills

• Operate computer systems and related software, including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs;
• Conduct research and present findings;
• Develop and implement research quality control procedures;
• Follow written and oral instruction;
• Manage projects according to department standards;
• Complete reports and required documentation according to prescribed standards;
• Ability to develop connections or work with diverse populations;
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with people contacted in the course of work, including co-workers, supervisors and citizens.
