Job Overview
The Librarian offers a library program to develop a culture of literacy and inquiry to promote student success and lifelong learning. The librarian empowers students and staff to become effective users of ideas and information; to help them acquire literacy, inquiry, and digital learning skills.
Position Description
- Evaluate, select and order new instructional materials, both print and digital, that meet the needs of the library program and meet defined district policy and procedures
- Provide instruction in research skills and inquiry methods to students and staff
- Provide opportunities to help learners become creative problem solvers and independent users and producers of ideas and information
- Model effective strategies for developing multiple literacies
- Inquire Collaborate with teachers to plan and deliver instruction that supports the curriculum
- Provide instruction based on the inquiry approach to learning
- Promote student inquiry to pursue, create, and share knowledge
- Offer professional development opportunities that promote best practices in inquiry-based teaching and learning
- Encourage the learning community to read a variety of literature for information and pleasure to develop their reading life
- Elevate literacy instruction through participation in national, state, and local reading initiatives
- Develop a collection reflective of diversity, student choice, and reading for information
- Protect the intellectual freedom of students and staff following defined FBISD policy and procedures
- Use and promote the use of digital resources and technologies across content areas for discovery, collaboration, critical analysis, creation, and presentation of learning
- Offer creative, innovative, and ethical use of current and emerging technologies
- Remain current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to school library programs
- If the position is tied to coaching a UIL sport, perform coaching duties as assigned as well as other duties required for the smooth, efficient operation of a successful athletic program
- Possess knowledge and adhere to UIL rules and regulations
- Assist the Athletic Department with budget, schedules, care/use of facilities
- Communicate with the Athletic Department on a regular basis
Qualification Requirements
- Master's degree in Library and/or Information Science or related field
- Valid Texas Teacher Certification
- Valid Texas Librarian Certification
- Valid Driver's license with CDL Certification preferred if coaching a UIL sport
- Minimum of 2 years of classroom teaching experience from a public or accredited private school
- Coaching experience preferred if coaching a UIL sport
- Knowledge and training in all phases of school librarianship
- Ability to serve as teacher, instructional specialist, and materials specialist
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
- Work is performed in classrooms, offices, work stations and meeting rooms
- Occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials
- The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus
- Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties
- May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress
