About the role
Bike Bus Champions are crucial in ensuring a school’s bike bus takes hold and keeps going! You will be working to coordinate bike bus volunteer schedules, connect families to bikes and resources, develop engaging culturally-responsive programming, and promote the bike bus at school events and PTA meetings. But you don’t need to know how to do it all - we’ll teach you the skills as you go, with full ongoing support provided.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with school staff and Bike Bus Coordinator to build relationships with school families
- Coordinate bike bus volunteer schedules, communications and supplies
- Promote the bike bus within your school and the wider community through English/Spanish bilingual outreach — school events, flyers, newsletters, social posts, community gatherings, and conversations at drop-off
- Educate students and families on how a bike bus works and what it takes to keep one going
- Collaborate with Coordinator to plan and execute biannual school bike fair and bike swap
- Relay bike bus route and safety concerns to the Coordinator
- Attend monthly city-wide bike bus leader meetings, Champion training and the biannual Bike Bus leader retreats
- Support the bike bus as a PTA-led activity
Qualifications
- Equity-Focused Connector: You are a respected parent, caregiver, staff or community member who cares deeply about all students having access to safe, joyful and independent active school transportation. Being bilingual in Spanish is a huge plus!
- Natural Communicator: You enjoy talking to people and are comfortable making the first approach, whether that is to a family at drop-off or at a business down the block.
- Eager Learner: You are curious about ways to gather the full school community around the bike bus, and are ready to dig in. You do not need experience in this area - we’ll teach you!
- Self-Directed and Reliable: You set your own working hours, and do well with executing tasks without day-to-day oversight.
- Present When It Counts: You are available for occasional early mornings and weekend events, and you are a visible, welcoming face when families show up.
Skills
- Bilingual in English/Spanish
- Lived experience in the Lent community
- Comfort riding a bike
- Experience with community organizing, school volunteering or PTAs
