About the role

Checkout.com is seeking a talented Legal Counsel with a strong banking and payments background to join our Legal team in Atlanta. As Legal Counsel, you will work closely with all areas of the business and take a collaborative approach to solving complex legal challenges. Reporting to the CEO of our North America banking operations, you will act as the primary legal support for our Georgia Merchant Acquiring Limited Purpose Bank (MALPB) charter. You will also be expected to advise on compliance with financial services and payments regulations, interact with regulators and assist in the implementation of broader regulatory projects and product launches for projects across the Americas.

Responsibilities

  • Support relationships with Georgia Department of Banking and Finance and US state and national regulators on license-related matters
  • Review payments product structures, flows and terms to ensure compliance with legal requirements
  • Advises on payments regulatory matters, including compliance with payments laws and related regulations in the US and across the Americas
  • Advises on broader regulatory requirements applicable to payment services providers, including with respect to group regulatory change projects
  • Advise the business on market expansion, researching and evaluating new territories and applying for new licenses or expanding the scope of existing licenses
  • Advise key business functions on new regulatory developments impacting our operations, products and contractual commitments
  • Conduct research on various multi-jurisdictional legal issues
  • Support the company’s strategic projects and initiatives by providing creative, proactive and results-orientated advice

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor and membership in one state bar or equivalent
  • 4+ years of legal experience
  • Strong understanding of legal principles applicable to payments and financial institutions in the US, including the payments ecosystem and payments regulatory and licensing strategy/execution
  • Previous FinTech, payments, software, e-commerce and/or bank experience is desirable but not essential
  • Experience working in a start-up or other fast-paced and dynamic environment is desirable but not essential
  • Comfort with ambiguity, constant change, and a fast-paced culture
  • A practical, solutions-oriented focus to solving legal challenges
  • Experience working internationally and on a variety of cross-border matters
  • Excellent time management skills and experience managing a diverse workload and competing stakeholder demands
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as needed, flexing the approach as the matter requires
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate and explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely
  • Enthusiasm for new challenges and skilling up in different areas of law

Qualifications

  • Federal Reserve, OCC & FDIC experience
