Legal Administrative Specialist

About the role

The Department of Justice and the United States Attorneys' Offices rely on a dedicated team to support various criminal trials. This position requires a combination of technical skills and administrative support.

Responsibilities

• Organizing and managing criminal discovery materials for assigned cases.
• Providing case-related administrative support to attorneys and preparing legal/administrative documents.
• Preparing master trial exhibits in electronic and hard copy, and working closely with Automated Litigation Support for courtroom presentations.
• Proofreading and providing basic editing assistance for legal documents such as appellate briefs, motion responses, search warrant affidavits, and material witness warrants.

Requirements

Conditions of employment:

• You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
• Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, and tax checks, and drug testing.
• Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
• You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.

Specialized Experience, Education, or a combination thereof:

• To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet at least one of the following conditions:
• One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in the Federal service or private sector, involving duties such as providing technical advice to litigation teams, organizing and managing case-specific discovery, analyzing complex litigation support requirements, using automated litigation support technology, researching, analyzing, and summarizing legal precedents, and preparing and maintaining trial-related documents.
• Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M. in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law).
• A combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP), Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP), and Veterans Employment Opportunity Act (VEOA) considerations:

• Eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees may receive selection priority under ICTAP.
• Surplus or displaced employees eligible under CTAP may also receive selection priority.
• Veterans with a compensable service-connected disability of 30% or more, certain other veterans, spouses of certain members of the armed forces, and returning Peace Corps volunteers are eligible for VEOA appointments.
