Lecturer Pool in Department of Sociology (Academic Year 26/27)

Cal Poly Humboldt’s Department of Sociology invites applications for its Temporary Faculty Pool. The department offers a BA in Sociology, a BA in Criminology and Justice Studies (CJS), a BA in Cannabis Studies, and an MA in Public Sociology. Approximately two-thirds of our students identify as students of color, first-generation college students, and/or Pell Grant recipients. We are committed to addressing social justice at the local, regional, and global levels and fostering a desire for social change among students and the community.

About the Role

The department seeks lecturers to teach courses across our undergraduate and graduate programs. Appointments are made on an as-needed basis, with first consideration given to applications received by April 1st annually.

Courses/Areas of Specialization

The department offers courses in the following areas:

• Sociology BA electives: Inequalities and Change, Environment, Communities and Identity.
• Criminology and Justice Studies BA electives: Inequalities, Identities, and Crime; Law; Justice and Policy; Social Research and Action.
• Cannabis Studies BA concentrations: Environmental Stewardship and Policy Stewardship.

Sample course topics include Migration and the Global Economy, Forests and Culture, Environmental Crime, Global Cannabis, Cannabis and the Environment, Cannabis and Social Equity, Drugs and Society, Altruism and Compassion, Community Organizing, Policing Bodies, and Popular Culture.

Qualifications

• M.A./M.S. or equivalent in the appropriate field, with documented evidence of course-related content expertise.
• Preference given to candidates with documented successful teaching experience at the college level within the last three years.
• For graduate-level courses, at least 30 units of coursework toward a PhD must be completed in addition to an M.A./M.S. or equivalent.
• Evidence of effectiveness and inclusive pedagogy in teaching and mentoring low-income, first-generation, and students of color.
• Recent teaching experience (within the last 2-3 years) working with freshmen on transitioning from high school to college and developing foundational academic skills (e.g., time management, reading strategies, writing, test preparation, and classroom expectations).
• Preference given to candidates with an earned doctoral degree in a relevant field.

Pay

Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. The monthly base salary ranges for the Lecturer classification are as follows (prorated based on units worked):

• Lecturer A: $5,507 – $6,677
• Lecturer B: $6,221 – $13,224
• Lecturer C: $6,825 – $14,523

Appointees are typically placed at the beginning of the range. Pay is distributed in six monthly payments per full semester. For more details, see the Explanation of the Distribution of Pay.
