About teachHOUSTON

teachHOUSTON (tH) is the University of Houston's nationally recognized secondary STEM teacher preparation program and addresses the critical need for highly qualified STEM teachers in Texas and across the nation. The program is a collaboration between the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the College of Education, and local school districts. teachHOUSTON provides compact, flexible degree plans that enable STEM majors to earn grades 7–12 teacher certification without adding additional time or cost to a four-year degree. Candidates engage in early and sustained field experiences while receiving rigorous, research-based instruction that integrates deep STEM content knowledge with effective pedagogical practice. Since its inception, teachHOUSTON has prepared more than 600 certified secondary STEM teachers, with the vast majority serving students throughout the Greater Houston region, including many high-need schools. The program is committed to developing highly effective educators who positively impact student achievement while supporting teacher success and long-term retention.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching a full instructional load of undergraduate and graduate teachHOUSTON courses.
  • Supervising and mentoring preservice teachers during field-based teaching experiences, including securing and maintaining school placements and conducting classroom observations.
  • Contributing to curriculum development, continuous program improvement, and assessment efforts.
  • Assisting with recruitment and retention initiatives for prospective and current students.
  • Designing and facilitating professional learning experiences for preservice teachers, beginning teachers, and/or practicing educators.
  • Building and maintaining partnerships with school districts, community organizations, and STEM stakeholders.
  • Supporting STEM outreach initiatives and externally funded projects.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in STEM Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, Engineering Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching inquiry-based STEM lessons in public schools.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring preservice and/or in-service teachers.
  • Experience designing and facilitating professional learning for educators.
  • Experience with STEM outreach and partnership development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience preparing secondary STEM teachers in a university teacher preparation program.
  • Experience supervising preservice teachers in field experiences.
  • Experience collaborating with K–12 school districts and community organizations.
  • Experience integrating instructional technology and/or artificial intelligence into STEM teaching and learning.
  • Experience contributing to grant-funded initiatives.
  • Experience supporting teacher induction, mentoring beginning teachers, or educator retention initiatives.
  • Experience with makerspaces, project-based learning, or innovative STEM instructional approaches.
