About the role

The Department of Religion and Theology is seeking a Lecturer in Comparative Religions with expertise in Asian religions. This is a fixed-term maternity cover role from September 1, 2026, through to August 31, 2027, or the return of the current post holder.

Responsibilities

  • Teach modules on Asian religions, with a focus on Buddhism, and a module on Religions and Material Culture.
  • Convene an introductory module on Approaches to the Study of Religions and co-teach a fieldwork-based module.
  • Contribute to other teaching-related activities such as supervising undergraduate dissertations and personal tutoring.
  • Undertake administrative duties within the department, as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Hold a PhD in a relevant field or be nearing completion of a doctorate.
  • Have the knowledge and expertise appropriate to teaching areas specified at mainly undergraduate levels.
  • Be able to work collaboratively with others in teaching and scholarship, engage and enthuse students in both small and large group teaching, and provide effective academic support for students, including one-to-one sessions.

Benefits

This position offers:

  • Fixed-term maternity cover from September 1, 2026, through to August 31, 2027, or the return of the current post holder.
  • 0.7 FTE contract type.
  • Salary range of £43,482 - £50,252 per annum pro rata.

The salary for this position is £43,482 - £50,252 per annum pro rata.

The schedule for this position is 0.7 FTE.
