About the role

The School of Humanities and Social Science, UNSW Canberra, seeks a Lecturer in Australian politics for a three-year fixed-term position. The successful candidate will teach ZHSS1401 Ideals, Interests and Power and additional courses as required. In addition to expertise in Australian Politics, the ideal candidate will have broader interests and skills in fields such as Political Philosophy, Security Studies, and/or International Relations.

A Lecturer is expected to carry out activities to develop their scholarly research and professional activities both nationally and internationally, and to contribute significantly to the teaching and service missions of the School and Faculty.

This role offers the opportunity to deliver outstanding teaching while building a strong research profile. You will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education, develop innovative learning experiences, and support students in achieving excellent academic outcomes. Alongside teaching responsibilities, you will undertake impactful research, contribute to collaborative projects, and help advance disciplinary knowledge through scholarly engagement and funding initiatives.

Working within a collegial academic environment, you will collaborate across disciplines, mentor students, and play an active role in shaping the future of politics education and research at UNSW Canberra. The role reports to the Head of School and has no direct reports.

Responsibilities

• Teach ZHSS1401 Ideals, Interests and Power and additional courses as required.
• Develop and deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Design and implement innovative learning experiences using educational technologies and online delivery methods.
• Engage in individual and collaborative research consistent with disciplinary practice.
• Contribute to applications for competitive research funding, including participating as co-investigator or chief investigator.
• Publish high-quality, high-impact research outcomes.
• Collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships within the academic community.
• Mentor students and contribute to the service missions of the School and Faculty.

Requirements

• A PhD in a discipline related to the study of Australian politics and/or relevant work experience.
• Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design, development, and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels.
• Experience using and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods.
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence (e.g., relevant discipline-based curriculum design and development).
• Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact, and a clear desire and ability to achieve research excellence.
• Capacity for research leadership and engagement in collaborative research projects.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships.

Pay

Remuneration: Level B from $127,947 plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading.

Schedule

Employment type: Full-time (35 hours per week).

Duration: 3-year fixed-term contract.
