About the role

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Science invites applications for two 100% special faculty/lecturer positions in the English and Philosophy Department to begin mid-September 2026. We are seeking a dynamic, student-centered instructor dedicated to fostering inclusive, engaging, and high-impact learning environments for an undergraduate student population comprised of all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. This lecturer position is a full-time, one-year appointment, eligible for renewal for successive annual appointments. Candidates must be located in or willing to relocate to the greater Spokane-Cheney area.

The primary responsibility of this position is teaching foundational writing courses, helping first-year students develop the critical thinking, rhetorical, and academic writing skills necessary for their university journey and beyond. Depending on qualifications and department needs, teaching duties may extend to English secondary education, introductory creative writing, introductory technical communication, and/or introduction to literature.

Responsibilities

• Deliver a standard instructional load focused primarily on first-year composition and introductory writing courses (45 credits per academic year).
• Implement evidence-based writing pedagogy, aligning course outcomes with university general education goals and the English Composition program curriculum.
• Hold regular office hours, provide timely and constructive feedback on student writing, and mentor students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds.
• Participate in composition program meetings, assessment initiatives, and professional development workshops.
• Actively engage in assessment of student learning and maintain health and safety protocols in assigned classrooms.
• Attend required trainings and program meetings; committee service may be assigned with approval from the Department Chair and College Dean.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Writing Studies, or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
• Record of success teaching first-year composition or introductory writing at the college level.
• Evidence of a strong commitment to student success and ability to employ inclusive, culturally responsive teaching practices.
• Demonstrated ability to apply a responsive and flexible approach supportive of universal access for students, faculty, staff, and the public.
• Willingness to teach evening classes as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or a closely related writing studies degree.
• Experience utilizing CMS (Canvas), digital writing tools, multimodal composition, or teaching in online/hybrid environments.
• Experience working with first-generation, multilingual, or historically underrepresented college students.

Pay

$63,442 per academic year.

Schedule

Full-time, 100% academic year appointment (September–June). Work schedule varies quarter to quarter to fulfill responsibilities, including potential evening classes.
