Job Description
The Newington Public Schools is seeking a Learning Tutor to implement tiered intervention programs for individual and small groups of students who have academic concerns under a Scientifically Research Based Intervention (SRBI) model. The tutor will work under the direction of a certified staff member.
Essential Job Functions
- Maintain confidentiality of students.
- Drills to reinforce skills that teacher has taught.
- Affords assistance to students with work completion.
- Communicates with teacher about student progress and issues.
- Carries out classroom activities as directed by the teacher.
- Affords assistance in the administration of student assessments as directed by the certified teacher.
- Supports the implementation of teacher planned lessons, both individually and in small groups.
- Supports the implementation of student behavioral plans (both in the classroom).
- Supervises students in the classroom.
- Covers classrooms in absence of the teacher.
- Supervises students in the classroom.
- Enforces classroom, school and community rules and expectations as directed by the special education teacher.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
- General knowledge of intervention practices.
- Ability to independently, effectively deal with student behaviors.

- Effective interpersonal skills with staff, students, supervisors and the general public.
Required Physical And Mental Effort And Environmental Conditions
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, squat, stretch, kneel, push and pull.
- Ability to assist in physical management and personal hygiene of students.
- Ability to stand for extended period of time.
- Ability to hear normal sounds with some background noise and to communicate effectively.
- Ability to concentrate on fine detail with constant interruption.
- Ability to attend to task/function for more than 60 minutes at a time.
- Ability to remember multiple task/assignments given to self and others over long periods of time.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree and valid Connecticut Teaching Certification.
