Lead Veterinarian

About the role

Chewy Vet Care is hiring a Lead Veterinarian to help scale a connected, detailed omnichannel customer experience for clients of our Chewy Vet Care practices. This leader will oversee all aspects of veterinary medical care, team leadership, and practice operations to deliver high-quality, compassionate care while embodying Chewy Vet Care’s culture and exceeding pet parent expectations.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a leader for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and assistants, setting the standard for high-level, proficient veterinary medical care and fostering collaboration to deliver an exceptional pet parent experience.
• Hold team members accountable for results by being accessible, removing barriers, facilitating change, and providing mentorship and performance feedback.
• Implement outlined policies and procedures, leverage integrated technology, and deliver consistent, appropriate medical care within your skillset.
• Perform physical examinations, diagnostic, medical, surgical, and dental procedures while minimizing patient stress and discomfort.
• Conduct sophisticated surgeries and manage complicated cases with expertise.
• Communicate examination findings, diagnoses, and treatment plans clearly to clients.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date client/patient medical and surgical records, logs, and follow-up care.
• Stay current with advancements in veterinary medicine through continuing education.
• Lead, manage, develop, and mentor associate veterinarians to improve individual performance in client happiness, teamwork, medical quality, record keeping, and efficiency.
• Assist in developing the paraprofessional team to ensure the delivery of high-quality care and outstanding client service.
• Oversee operating, safety, and compliance procedures as required by law and Chewy Vet Care policies.
• Serve as the designated veterinarian responsible for controlled substance accountability, regulatory compliance, and related records within the practice.
• Maintain accurate controlled substance records and oversee compliant ordering, storage, inventory management, reconciliation, and disposal.
• Some travel may be required.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM, VMD) or equivalent.
• Active state license in good standing, DEA license, and other state credentials as required.
• 5+ years of experience in general medicine and surgery; 1–3 years of leadership experience.
• 2 years of supervised experience with veterinary radiation machines preferred.
• Comfortable collaborating in a team-oriented environment with a passion for helping people and pets, emphasizing empathy and excellent customer service.
• Ability to multi-task and perform well in a fast-paced, self-starter environment.

Physical Requirements

• Standing or walking up to 80% per shift.
• Frequently lift up to 50–70 pounds (team lift optional).
• Occasionally lift greater than 70+ pounds using a team lift.
• Stand, push, pull, carry, squat, and kneel as required.

Pay

The specific salary offered may be influenced by factors such as relevant experience, education, and work location. This position is eligible for 401k and new hire and annual equity grants.
