Summary
The Lead Trauma/Burn Registrar is a key member of the Trauma Registry at Rhode Island Hospital. As the only ACS verified Level I Trauma Center and ABA verified Burn Center in the state, we handle over 4,000 patients annually. The role involves ensuring data accuracy, supporting performance improvement activities, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
Registry Data Quality and Oversight
- Ensures accurate and timely data entry into the trauma database through scheduled data scrubbing reports.
- Analyzes and remediates data entry issues to maintain data quality and integrity.
- Coordinates data scrubbing activities for NTDB, TQIP, ABA, and internal research.
- Maintains and updates the data dictionary.
- Reports concerns about inaccurate data collection, incomplete documentation, or unreliable data sources to the Trauma Program Manager.
Data Submission and Reporting
- Submits required data to TQIP, NTDB, and the American Burn Association.
- Produces Trauma Committee reports as directed by the Trauma Program Manager.
- Manages and fulfills data requests in compliance with departmental and institutional policy.
Database and Technical Leadership
- Provides database support and troubleshooting for Trauma Registry staff.
- Works with the trauma database vendor to implement necessary updates and changes.
- Collaborates with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager to ensure database alignment with clinical and reporting needs.
Education and Staff Support
- Educates trauma registrars on NTDB and ABA data definitions, research initiatives, and documentation requirements.
- Identifies and collaborates on improving clinical documentation quality.
Program Support and Accreditation
- Assists in coordinating trauma registry meetings.
- Participates in ACS site visits and other accreditation reviews.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to support division goals.
Professional Development and Compliance
- Engages in ongoing professional development and education.
- Adheres to institutional and departmental policies and objectives.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Certifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Medical Record Management or related health science field preferred.
- Completed an approved Trauma Registrar course.
- AIS (Abbreviated Injury Scale) / Injury Severity Index certification.
- CAISS or CSTR certification (or completed within one year of hire).
Experience, Knowledge, Skills
- At least five (5) years of healthcare experience.
- Strong background in medical terminology.
- Solid knowledge of ICD 10 CM and AIS coding systems.
- Proficiency in database management systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with initiative, judgment, and discretion.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Professional demeanor and ability to promote a positive institutional image.
