Responsibilities
- Supervise, evaluate and provide training for all vehicle technicians and all related personnel.
- Assign and oversee work and emergency road services performed by technicians and all related personnel.
- Perform all phases of repair, as well as diagnosis of minor and major repairs on all system vehicles.
- Inspect work performed by technicians and other personnel to ensure that proper standards of repair work are maintained.
- Oversee and observe the operators of the hydraulic jacks, lifts or hoists to raise trucks, buses, cars, and heavy parts or equipment.
- Diagnose problems with fuel systems; repair or replace minor parts on engines and fuel systems.
- Inspect tools and maintain equipment for proper condition, and make recommendations for replacement equipment.
- Remove and reinstall engine and components to serviceable and operational condition.
- Diagnose minor and major problems with ignition and electrical systems to include turn signals, hazard/4-way signals, 8-way warning lights with monitor systems and strobe lights.
- Repair/replace minor and major engine parts.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic and air brake systems to include all phases of repair (rebuild caliper, hydro-booster, air brake valves and brake chambers, turn and true rotors and drums) powers steering pump and gears, kingpins, bushings, tie rod ends, and front axle components, rear axle gear and other hubs, drive line and components.
- Diagnose and repair or rebuild transmissions (automatic and manual), clutch and pressure plate.
- Utilize a wide variety of computerized diagnostic test equipment, standard tools, specialty tools, and reference manuals.
- Aid with and/or assume duties of other vehicle technicians as necessary.
- Follow work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable, and punctual manner.
- Operate school system owned vehicles in a safe and courteous manner following all safety rules and laws.
- Prepare and submit accurate and timely reports as requested to appropriate supervisors.
- Carefully read and follow all safety requirements regarding use, handling and storage of various chemicals and the operation of all equipment.
- Maintain knowledge of first-aid procedures.
- Participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to the assignment.
- Assist with the Shop Foreman role in their absence.
- Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies.
- Implement appropriate safety measures and emergency plans to create and sustain a secure and healthy work environment consistent with district and department rules, regulations, polices, and procedures.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by appropriate supervisors.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED equivalent and valid class B Commercial Driver's License with P and S Endorsements.
- Experience: Minimum five (5) years of job training. Mid-range diesel engines to include: Mercedes MBE906 Diesel, Navistar, Duramaxx, Power Stroke, and Cummins. All gasoline engines, school bus bodies and chassis, hydraulic and air brake systems, steering components, manual and automatic transmissions, drive lines and rear axles.
Skills
- Leadership skills to organize and lead on vehicle maintenance issues.
- Physical tasks as required; including: lifting/carrying heavy equipment/machinery, frequent bending, standing, climbing, and walking for extended periods.
- Use manual tools and power equipment.
- Safely handle hazardous materials and practice all electrical safety-related work practice requirements.
