Engineering$118k–$180k/yrFull-time

About the role

This position offers the opportunity to directly apply your experience and knowledge of materials, structural analysis, structural steel design, and reinforced concrete design to support creative, cost-effective solutions for existing and new designs. You will work on a wide range of power plant, oil & gas, and industrial facility modifications and upgrades to support client requests and reviews, including creating calculations, design documents, and specifications.

Responsibilities include conducting structural analyses under complex loading conditions such as wind, seismic, blast, and pressurization. As a structural lead, you will guide junior-level engineers and designers through structural engineering design efforts, coordinate detailed design phases, and troubleshoot a variety of structural engineering issues. You will perform structural analysis and design of steel frames, connections, concrete members, equipment and piping supports, and foundations, develop integrated structural designs, and prepare supporting calculations, technical specifications, and engineering studies. You will also independently review work performed by others, coordinate with engineers, project managers, clients, and suppliers, and perform on-site structural condition assessments to propose upgrades, replacements, or repairs for existing structures.

This role supports career development through peer-learning and mentorship, with opportunities to share knowledge via S&L’s systems and “Communities of Practice.” Client interface will likely include travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant sites for condition assessments, construction coordination, and field verification of designs. This position is based on a hybrid work schedule requiring in-office work three days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Apply expertise in materials, structural analysis, steel design, and reinforced concrete design to deliver creative, cost-effective solutions for new and existing designs.
  • Perform structural analyses under complex loading conditions including wind, seismic, blast, and pressurization.
  • Lead structural engineering design efforts, guide junior engineers and designers, and coordinate detailed design phases.
  • Conduct structural analysis and design for steel frames, connections, concrete members, equipment and piping supports, and foundations.
  • Develop integrated structural designs and supporting calculations, technical specifications, and engineering studies.
  • Independently review calculations and drawings prepared by others.
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, clients, and suppliers to ensure complete and timely design delivery.
  • Perform on-site structural condition assessments and recommend repairs, modifications, or replacements for degraded or repurposed structures.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers and contribute to knowledge-sharing through S&L’s systems and Communities of Practice.
  • Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant sites for condition assessments, construction coordination, and field verification of designs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a structural engineering emphasis from an ABET-accredited program; Master’s in Civil Engineering preferred.
  • Eight or more years of experience in the design of non-commercial, heavy industrial plants or oil & gas plants, with a focus on analysis of steel structures, concrete foundations, and supports for new plants or modifications/replacements for existing plants.
  • Experience selecting structural materials and preparing/reviewing specifications.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Experience writing and providing support documentation for structural engineering calculations.
  • Technical knowledge of structural engineering principles including analysis for structural supports, loads, and design integrity.
  • Proficiency with design techniques, tools, and principles for producing technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models for industrial plants.
  • Proficiency with one or more of the following programs: MathCad, STAAD PRO, RISA, SAP2000, SAFE, STRUDL, or ANSYS.
  • Proficiency with design codes and standards such as IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
