What You Will Do

In coordination with leadership, provides oversight of the Spiritual Care Department and associated staff and volunteers. Provide spiritual care and spiritual counseling services for patients, families and team members that respects diversity and differences including, but not limited to culture, gender expressions, sexual orientation and spiritual/religious practices. Oversees the day to day functioning of the department.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Other Successful completion of at least 4 units of ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education.
  • 3 Years experience as a health care Chaplain.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree of Divinity of related field (equivalent needed for Board Certification by endorsing faith group).

Essential Functions

  • Leadership: In coordination with leadership, is responsible for the oversight of the Spiritual Care Department in clinically designated areas, and the delivery of spiritual care to patients, families, and staff.
  • Delivery of Service and Documentation: Assess, formulate, and utilize spiritual assessments, interventions, outcomes and care plans in order to contribute effectively to the well-being of the person receiving care. This assessment is to be completed and documented within the shift. Responsible for the delivery of individual and group spiritual care for patients, families, and staff in clinically designated areas. Provide crisis intervention as necessary in a timely manner (hospital setting this may include Code Blue and trauma code), offering integrative healing modalities and spiritual care. Helps patients, families, and staff address bioethical issues, organ donation, preparation of advance healthcare directives, and facilitates treatment decisions based on patient values. Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings and/or care conferences, when appropriate. Responsible for the charting and documentation of all spiritual care visits. Provides appropriate rituals/services for patient and family that include rituals for the newborn, end of life rituals, memorial services, and other rituals that serve to celebrate, comfort and encourage staff.
  • Training and Education: Provides orientation to new staff, per diem staff, volunteers, etc. Participates in interviews of prospective candidates. Develops and implements a program of staff in-service and education, including new employee orientation and other in-services as needed.
  • Volunteer Management: Responsible for oversight of volunteers serving the Spiritual Care Department with screening, recruiting, orienting and training. Responsible for the quality of the work, data collection, coaching and mentoring of department volunteers.
  • Customer Service: Consistently communicates in a positive and timely manner with staff members, Sharp employees, physicians, patients and visitors. Maintains positive relationships with community clergy, CPE students and volunteers. This may include providing orientation, scheduling and direct supervision of volunteers. Handles problems in a professional and proactive manner.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a collegial department, and multidisciplinary setting.
  • Excellent clinical skills and proven ability to effectively minister with persons of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.
  • Excellent teaching skills that may involve in-services, presentations, and other work.
  • Ability to initiate new programs, as well organize and oversee existing ones.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, Microsoft Office applications, and electronic medical record.
  • Basic understanding of medical terms and diagnosis.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

$39.690 - $57.370
