Lead Software Engineer, Frontend
Job Overview
MOTER is hiring a Lead Software Engineer, Frontend to lead the technical direction of our web applications and ship the interfaces our customers use every day. This is a hands-on leadership role for a strong frontend engineer who combines architecture, product judgment, and execution.
About the role
The Lead will shape MOTER’s TypeScript, React, Redux, and Next.js platform, raise the bar for quality across design systems, accessibility, performance, and observability, and partner closely with product, design, backend, and platform teammates to deliver polished, trustworthy software.
Essential Functions
Architecture & Technical Leadership:
- Own the frontend architecture for MOTER's web applications, including component structure, state management patterns, rendering strategy, and data-fetching approaches.
- Lead technical design discussions and RFCs, making pragmatic trade-offs between speed, maintainability, and long-term product quality.
- Guide framework, tooling, and platform decisions across the frontend stack - including upgrades, shared packages, build performance, and developer experience – while setting a high bar for code quality, testing, documentation, and code review.
- Contribute meaningfully to the codebase as a hands-on technical leader.
Product Craft & UX Engineering:
- Partner closely with product and design to turn ambiguous requirements into intuitive, high-quality user experiences.
- Build interfaces for complex, data-rich workflows with strong attention to usability, clarity, trust, and edge-case behavior.
- Prototype quickly to reduce risk and accelerate learning, and when to harden solutions for production.
- Champion thoughtful interaction design, including loading states, error handling, empty states, motion, and responsive behavior.
Design Systems, Accessibility & Quality:
- Own and evolve MOTER's component library and frontend patterns in partnership with design.
- Make accessibility a default part of the engineering process, including semantic HTML, keyboard support, focus management, and practical assistive technology testing.
- Establish consistent standards for frontend testing, visual quality, and release confidence.
Performance & Observability:
- Set expectations for frontend performance and drive improvements to Core Web Vitals, bundle size, responsiveness, and runtime reliability, making sound rendering decisions across server-side rendering, static generation, and client-side interactivity.
- Improve frontend observability by partnering with backend and platform engineers on logging, error tracking, tracing, and product analytics.
- Design resilient client behavior around loading failures, stale data, retries, and degraded backend conditions.
Platform Partnership:
- Partner with backend and platform teams on the BFF/API layer, supporting web application, and contributing to endpoint design, contracts, authentication flows, and developer ergonomics.
- Work effectively with AWS-hosted and serverless environments with an understanding of operational, security, and cost trade-offs.
- Collaborate on CI/CD, preview environments, release workflows, and production debugging so frontend changes can ship safely and quickly.
- Contribute to infrastructure and deployment discussions where frontend requirements matter, without needing to be the sole owner of the cloud platform.
AI-Assisted Engineering:
- Use AI-assisted development tools effectively and help the team adopt practical patterns including review expectations, testing standards, and appropriate guardrails that improve speed and quality without creating unnecessary process overhead.
Mentoring & Leading Engineers:
- Lead and mentor frontend engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, design reviews, and day-to-day collaboration.
- Help senior engineers sharpen their judgment on scope, implementation strategy, and trade-offs.
- Unblock progress across the team through pairing, debugging, cross-functional collaboration, and clear technical communication.
- Partner with engineering leadership and recruiting on interview design, candidate evaluation, and scaling the frontend team thoughtfully.

Strong fundamentals in HTML, CSS, accessibility, and web performance.
Experience building or evolving component libraries, shared UI systems, or design systems in production.
Solid understanding of frontend observability, including error tracking, analytics, logging, and production debugging workflows.
Ability to work effectively across the frontend and backend boundary, including API design, integration patterns, and authentication flows.
Familiarity with cloud-hosted application environments, CI/CD pipelines, and modern release practices.
Practical experience using AI-assisted coding tools and good judgment about where they help and where they require extra care.
Demonstrated success mentoring other engineers and raising the technical bar on a team.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
High work ethic, self-motivation, and initiative.
Good judgment, high integrity, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a larger team.
