Lead Research Specialist | School of Medicine - Pediatrics, Solid Tumor

About the Role

Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures. Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques. May assist in protocol design. Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator. Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures. Analyzes and interprets results of studies. Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use and operation of laboratory techniques and equipment. Calibrates, troubleshoots, and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment. Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings. Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards. Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data, and prepares charts and graphs. Monitors the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances. Performs related responsibilities as required.

Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against, and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents. This position requires in-person work at an Emory University location; remote work is not an option.

Responsibilities

• Perform specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures with minimal supervision.
• Use independent judgment to apply or adapt scientific techniques; assist in protocol design.
• Investigate and propose alternative experimental procedures for principal investigator consideration.
• Plan and schedule research procedures; analyze and interpret study results.
• Demonstrate and train others on laboratory techniques and equipment operation.
• Calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform routine repair and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
• Review scientific literature and compile findings related to research developments and techniques.
• Monitor laboratory processes to ensure quality assurance standards are met.
• Record study results, compile and analyze data, and prepare charts and graphs.
• Oversee the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances.
• Work with the Goldsmith Lab to investigate novel T cell therapy and immunotherapy approaches in vitro and in vivo using human-derived pediatric solid tumor models.
• Process clinical trial samples for mass cytometry (CyTOF).
• Perform animal experiments, including handling and related procedures.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
• Minimum of 2 years dedication to the position due to the time and effort required for training and project continuity.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong expertise in immunology, immune-oncology, or cell and cancer biology.
• Demonstrated expertise in cytometry and immunophenotyping, including sample processing, data acquisition, and data analysis using FlowJo/Cytobank software.
• Proficiency in functional immunology assays.
• Experience with routine cell culture, organoid modeling, and molecular biology techniques (e.g., western blot, RT-qPCR, ELISA).
• Animal handling experience.
• Self-motivation, strong work ethic, and ability to work as part of a team.
• Willingness to learn new technologies.
• Effective judgment and problem-solving skills with little or no supervision.
• Strong attention to detail and multitasking abilities.
