About the role
As the Lead Quality Control Engineer (LQCE) at Hensel Phelps, you will manage the quality control (QC) process on our projects, exercising judgment and discretion in making QC-related recommendations, implementing policies and procedures, and handling a wide variety of QC matters in both the field and office. You may mentor less-experienced QC engineers on large projects or perform QC activities across multiple smaller projects. This is a safety-sensitive position.
Responsibilities
- Review and update the project quality process log (QPL) and provide comments to the QC manager.
- Under the oversight of the Project Superintendent (PS), direct the removal and replacement of non-conforming work and stop work not in compliance with the contract.
- Ensure full awareness of the contract, plans, specifications, and applicable codes.
- Submit and review RFIs to ensure changes are implemented in the field.
- Receive trade partner test and inspection requests and produce a coordinated daily test and inspection schedule.
- Actively participate in the work completion tagging process, in-house punch list process, and pre-final punch list process to document deficient items in the field.
- Audit trade partner quality control procedures and participate in the quality recognition program.
- Actively participate in the continuous improvement process (CIP) and lessons learned, advocating for these programs.
- Perform safety and housekeeping inspections through the SAFE program.
Requirements
- A 4-year degree in civil or structural engineering, architecture, or construction management.
- Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience on large commercial construction projects.
- Strong communication skills.
- Technical expertise in comprehending specifications, standards, and code requirements for all disciplines (architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel-based templates), Prolog, Primavera, and AutoCAD.
Physical Requirements
- Moderate work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently, and/or 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
- Periodic walking, kneeling, sitting, crouching, reaching, stooping, reading/seeing, speaking, pushing, pulling, lifting, standing, and typing.
- Frequent communication with employees and external stakeholders on office administration topics.
- Constant operation of computers and office machinery (calculator, copy machine, phone, printer).
- Regular sitting in a stationary position in front of a computer screen.
- Constant reading of written communications, mail, blueprints, and field measurements.
- Climbing: Ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps at various heights.
- Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching.
- Stooping: Bending the body downward and forward by the spine at the waist.
- Visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle as certified and appropriate.
- Occasional exposure to high and low temperatures.
- Frequent exposure to noisy environments and outdoor elements (precipitation, wind).
