Job Summary
The Lead, Project Engineering, will manage the execution of multiple development efforts to ensure accurate and timely completion of tasks to meet customer requirements within allocated cost and schedule commitments. This is a hands-on role and supports multiple laser development program efforts including hardware, test and operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical proposals with the Business Development and Engineering teams to ensure work output is consistent with business needs and compliant with development practices.
- Develops, oversees and coordinates the cost/schedule/technical aspects of ongoing engineering projects and subcontractors within the program guidelines set by the Program Manager and customer.
- Safeguards costs are within the dictated budget, oversees Estimate to Complete activities, and identifies to the PM, any cost growth and reasons for growth.
- Identifies, tracks, mitigates and disposes of program level risks.
- Estimates resource and material needs for the project/product.
- Works through the functional organizations to assist in recommending staff and projecting future staffing requirements based in the current programs' work and future related business opportunities.
- Conducts earned value variance analysis of engineering tasks.
- Collaborates with production transition / hand off to Operations and Quality efforts.
- Provides recommendations on investments to improve operational efficiencies in the engineering organization.
- Aids in technical roadmap development for product lines.
- Follows strategic direction set by Program and functional leadership.
- Occasional travel to customer and supplier sites and other IMS locations as needed.
Required Capabilities
- U.S. Citizenship required due to government contract requirements.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong project management skills and willingness to take on project ownership and accountability.
- Ability to work in fast-paced, small team environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well within and outside of the organization with customers, vendors and leadership with minimal oversight.
- Ability to effectively communicate and transfer system architecture and design knowledge with other disciplines including software and hardware engineering, manufacturing, program management, suppliers and customers.
- Experience writing BOE’s and supporting proposals.
- Able to provide technical leadership, mentorship and guidance to junior engineers supporting engineering analysis, architecture, trade studies and continuous improvement.
- Support hands-on integration and testing of complex subsystems across all interfaces.
- Action and result-oriented.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure and to tight deadlines.
- Experience with management of design to cost activities.
- Skilled in estimating resource and material needs for the project/product.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 9 years or Graduate Degree and minimum of 7 years of prior relevant experience.
- 6+ years of Project Engineering experience in a DoD environment.
- 6+ years’ experience writing technical documentation and developing analysis reports.
- Experience with Earned Value Management (EVMS) in a DoD environment.
- Prior project engineering experience on at least two programs with at least one program being a medium scale complex system or subsystem (greater than 5 Systems Engineers or $15M).
