Job Summary

The Lead Painter serves as the senior painter and team leader responsible for directing painting operations, coordinating workforce activities, managing materials and resources, and ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with organizational standards.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides Leadership and Direction: Assigns, prioritizes, and oversees daily work activities of the painting team to ensure timely completion of projects and work orders.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and resource for painters, providing guidance, training, and support.
  • Plans and Coordinates Projects: Evaluates project requirements, develops work plans, determines labor and material needs, and coordinates project execution to minimize operational disruptions.
  • Manages Materials and Resources: Oversees paint inventory, equipment, and supplies to maintain operational readiness and cost-effective resource utilization.
  • Promotes Quality and Customer Service: Conducts inspections of completed work to ensure high-quality workmanship and adherence to departmental standards. Responds to customer needs and collaborates with departments to support facility improvement initiatives.
  • Ensures Safety and Regulatory Compliance: Promotes a culture of safety by enforcing departmental policies, regulatory standards, and safe work practices. Maintains compliance with applicable organizational and environmental requirements.
  • Supports Staff Development: Assists in training, mentoring, and developing team members to improve performance, productivity, and technical skills. Encourages teamwork, accountability, and professional growth within the department.
  • Contributes to Departmental Success: Participates in departmental meetings, planning activities, and organizational initiatives. Provides recommendations for process improvements, resource allocation, and operational efficiencies.

Education Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of commercial, institutional, healthcare, or industrial painting experience.
  • Experience with painting, wall coverings, furniture refinishing, surface preparation, and specialty coatings.

  • Ability to lead, direct, and coordinate the daily activities of painting personnel.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively work with employees, supervisors, contractors, and customers.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects and work assignments.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and develop staff while promoting teamwork and accountability.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and solve problems independently.
  • Ability to estimate labor, materials, and equipment requirements for painting projects.
  • Ability to inspect work for quality, accuracy, and compliance with organizational standards.
  • Ability to maintain accurate inventory levels and manage departmental resources effectively.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating activities with other trades and departments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading crews, coordinating projects, or serving in a senior painter role.

Functional Demands

  • Environment: Outside environmental conditions - Fumes, dusts, mists, or gases may affect the respiratory system or the skin. Intermittent noise to cause marked distraction or difficulty hearing other sounds. Hazards - proximity to moving mechanical parts; electrical current; flammable, explosive gases.
  • Hazards: Infectious Material Exposure - No routine or potential exposure to blood/body fluids/tissues. Exposure to solvents, chemicals and cleaning solutions used in various departments.
