Lead Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia)

About the role

The Primary Purpose of the Position is: To perform services of a Lead Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia), commonly referred to as a Lead Anesthesia Tech. Anesthesia Technicians perform logistical and technical support to anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists. They maintain anesthesiology supplies and equipment, set-up anesthetizing locations and operate, monitor, and collect data from anesthesia related equipment.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily guidance of anesthesia technicians.
• Ensure smooth workflow, cover shifts as needed, and assign tasks.
• Establish anesthesia stations in operating rooms and other areas.
• Prepare anesthesia machines, breathing circuits, cardiac monitors, suction devices, blood warmers, medication pumps, arm boards, and other required equipment and supplies.
• Calibrate, operate, and maintain physiological monitoring devices, blood chemistry analyzers, and other anesthesia-related equipment.
• Maintain inventory of medications, intravenous solutions, inhalation anesthetic agents, endotracheal tubes, and other expendable supplies.
• Assist physicians during spinal, epidural, and regional block procedures.
• Ensure availability of correct anesthesia equipment and supplies for each anesthetic procedure.
• Apply aseptic techniques and follow infection control procedures.
• Communicate effectively with employees at varying grade levels.

Requirements

This job is open to current permanent Department of Veteran Affairs employee, current permanent Federal employees of other agencies, and all US Citizens. The incumbent is a staff Medical Instrument Technician with 10% administrative responsibilities and 90% technical duties. The position requires prior knowledge of anesthesia equipment and supplies, and the ability to anticipate and prepare for surgical and anesthetic practices.

Qualifications

• Education: No specific educational requirements, but may be substituted for experience at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels.
• Certification: Certification is not required but is highly desirable at GS-6 or above.
• Experience: At least 3 years of experience demonstrating possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to provide all aspects of anesthesia technician services, including specialized duties.
• Technical KSAs: Demonstrated knowledge and comprehensive understanding of laboratory testing procedures, electronics and anesthesia equipment, central venous and pulmonary artery catheterization procedures, airway management techniques, and regulatory requirements.
• Communication: Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
