Lead Mechanical Field Engineer

About the Role

We are looking for top talent to join the expanding Bechtel Renewables & Clean Power business line to deliver a nominal 640MW single-unit natural gas fired combined cycle power project. This project will provide consistent electrical power to the regional grid using advanced gas turbine technology. The position will initially be based in the Reston, VA office (single status) to support preconstruction and project planning activities, followed by a long-term field assignment at the project site in Sullivan County, Indiana upon mobilization.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and coordination for all mechanical construction scopes, including gas turbines, rotating & static equipment installation, tanks, fin-fan coolers, and auxiliary mechanical systems.
• Responsible for construction work packaging, field engineering coordination, quantity tracking, technical issue resolution, inspection coordination, turnover support, and integration between construction, engineering, procurement, QA/QC, vendors, and commissioning teams.
• Lead and supervise a broad range of construction engineering work within a specific engineering discipline.
• Proactively engage with team development through CPM, competency development/assessment, and feedback.
• Coordinate with design on constructability issues.
• Direct the preparation of requisitions for field-procured materials, material substitution, services, and equipment.
• Oversee quantity take-off, control, reporting, and forecasting.
• Ensure zero-accident philosophy and safety requirements are implemented and adhered to by craft and others in the operational area.
• Coordinate system walkdowns and interface with startup specialists to support component/system turnover.
• Review and approve inspection test plans and subcontractor submittals.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) and 8–10 years of relevant experience, or 12–14 years of relevant work experience.
• Large EPC industrial or power project field engineering experience.
• Strong understanding of mechanical construction methods and sequencing.
• Experience with piping systems, rotating equipment, and static equipment installation.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical drawings, specifications, and P&IDs.
• Experience managing RFIs, redlines, as-builts, and technical queries.
• Understanding of welding, NDE, pressure testing, and turnover requirements.
• Experience coordinating inspections, testing, and turnover documentation.
• Strong interface coordination with construction, engineering, QA/QC, and vendors.
• Familiarity with AWP, CWPs, IWPs, and workface planning preferred.
• Strong communication, planning, and problem-solving skills.
