Lead Mechanical Engineer
About the role
STR is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to support the design, development, and implementation of electro-mechanical hardware for applications such as advanced multi-function Radar systems and unmanned systems. In this role, you will understand and implement requirements as they apply to electro-mechanical hardware, ensuring hardware moves through the entire lifecycle—from conceptualization, through design and fabrication, to integration, test, and delivery.
The hardware developed will be deployed in operationally relevant environments and must meet standards of quality, maintainability, and reuse. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in design, analysis, prototyping, manufacturing, and test & evaluation, with strong interpersonal, communication, and technical skills.
Responsibilities
- Interface with the broader hardware team (e.g., electrical, RF) to ensure complete and proper implementation of systems requirements.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand system requirements and specifications.
- Lead efforts to design and implement hardware designs, supporting assembly, integration, and testing. Activities include:
- Decomposition of needs and definition of requirements.
- Creation of detailed 3D CAD (SolidWorks and PDM) models and associated documentation (e.g., detailed drawings, bill-of-materials).
- Conducting analyses (Finite Element and “back-of-the-envelope”) for structural, shock, vibration, and thermal mitigation.
- Identification and specification of components and vendors.
- Near-term tasking may involve RF systems for airborne applications, with potential assignments to other applications as needed.
Requirements
- Ability to obtain a Top Secret (TS) security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
- Experience using SolidWorks to create 3D designs and associated documentation for fabrication and assembly.
- Expertise with structural, vibration, shock, and thermal analyses using ANSYS.
- Experience designing to meet specifications (e.g., compliance with MIL-STD-810).
- Experience with integration and test activities.
- Demonstrated desire to pursue new challenges, improve technical skills, and increase individual value to the organization.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, often under tight deadlines.
- Experience providing information for technical reviews (SRRs, PDRs, CDRs, TIMS).
- Bachelor’s degree and at least 8 years of applicable experience; or a Master’s degree and at least 6 years of applicable experience; or a PhD and at least 2 years of applicable experience. Equivalent experience will be considered.
Skills
- Proficiency in 3D CAD design (SolidWorks and PDM).
- Strong analytical skills for structural, vibration, shock, and thermal analyses.
- Component and vendor specification.
- Hardware assembly (test systems, prototypes, and deliverable units).
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and effective communicator.
Nice to have
- Active Secret or Top-Secret security clearance.
Pay
Full-Time Salary Range: $159,000 - $218,000. The salary range is based on external market data, with final offers considering factors such as candidate experience, education, training, key skills, security clearances, and prevailing market conditions.
