About the role

As a Lead Health Information Specialist (LHIS), you will play a critical role in supporting daily operations and ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and timely delivery of medical information. This role combines hands-on Release of Information (ROI) work with leadership support, training, and team coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Providing call support and assisting with ROI-related inquiries
  • Processing medical record requests accurately and confidentially in compliance with HIPAA
  • Assisting the Supervisor with inventory management, including Healthsource queue oversight and prioritization of urgent requests
  • Serving as a subject-matter resource for team members on ROI workflows, EMR navigation, SOPs, and best practices
  • Supporting client and internal escalations with timely follow-up and clear communication
  • Assisting with training and onboarding of new hires, including mentoring and coaching
  • Facilitating team training sessions and ongoing education to reinforce compliance and quality standards
  • Performing data entry, faxing, scanning, and other administrative duties as needed
  • Maintaining professionalism and effective communication with patients, providers, and clinical staff
  • Supporting overall team productivity and quality goals

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (must be from an Accredited Institute recognized by the State Dept. of Education)
  • Willingness and ability to travel locally on a weekly basis as needed
  • Proficiency with computers, email systems, and standard office equipment
  • Strong understanding of HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism
  • Ability to stay organized while working quickly; strong attention to detail is also required
  • Passing annual Introductory HIPAA examination (testing to be given annually in accordance with employee review)
  • Required to take and pass a 90-day ROI Certification course with a score of 85% or higher
  • Post-offer health screenings and proof and/or completion of vaccinations (e.g., flu shot, Tdap, COVID-19) may be required; exemptions reviewed on a case-by-case basis

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in healthcare, medical records, HIM, or Release of Information (ROI) required
  • Supervisory or lead experience strongly preferred
  • Previous production/metric-based work experience
  • In-person customer service experience
  • Ability to build relationships with on-site clients and customers
  • Comfortable bringing new ideas, process improvement suggestions, and feedback to internal stakeholders

Pay

The estimated base pay range per hour for this role is: $17—$21 USD

Schedule

  • Monday–Friday
  • 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM EST

Work Model

On-Site with Travel (Local travel required)
