About the role
As a Lead Health Information Specialist (LHIS), you will play a critical role in supporting daily operations and ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and timely delivery of medical information. This role combines hands-on Release of Information (ROI) work with leadership support, training, and team coordination.
Responsibilities
- Providing call support and assisting with ROI-related inquiries
- Processing medical record requests accurately and confidentially in compliance with HIPAA
- Assisting the Supervisor with inventory management, including Healthsource queue oversight and prioritization of urgent requests
- Serving as a subject-matter resource for team members on ROI workflows, EMR navigation, SOPs, and best practices
- Supporting client and internal escalations with timely follow-up and clear communication
- Assisting with training and onboarding of new hires, including mentoring and coaching
- Facilitating team training sessions and ongoing education to reinforce compliance and quality standards
- Performing data entry, faxing, scanning, and other administrative duties as needed
- Maintaining professionalism and effective communication with patients, providers, and clinical staff
- Supporting overall team productivity and quality goals
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (must be from an Accredited Institute recognized by the State Dept. of Education)
- Willingness and ability to travel locally on a weekly basis as needed
- Proficiency with computers, email systems, and standard office equipment
- Strong understanding of HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism
- Ability to stay organized while working quickly; strong attention to detail is also required
- Passing annual Introductory HIPAA examination (testing to be given annually in accordance with employee review)
- Required to take and pass a 90-day ROI Certification course with a score of 85% or higher
- Post-offer health screenings and proof and/or completion of vaccinations (e.g., flu shot, Tdap, COVID-19) may be required; exemptions reviewed on a case-by-case basis
Qualifications
- Prior experience in healthcare, medical records, HIM, or Release of Information (ROI) required
- Supervisory or lead experience strongly preferred
- Previous production/metric-based work experience
- In-person customer service experience
- Ability to build relationships with on-site clients and customers
- Comfortable bringing new ideas, process improvement suggestions, and feedback to internal stakeholders
Pay
The estimated base pay range per hour for this role is: $17—$21 USD
Schedule
- Monday–Friday
- 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM EST
