About the Role

As a Lead Health Information Specialist (LHIS), you will play a critical role in supporting daily operations and ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and timely delivery of medical information. This role combines hands-on Release of Information (ROI) work with leadership support, training, and team coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Providing call support and assisting with ROI-related inquiries
  • Processing medical record requests accurately and confidentially in compliance with HIPAA
  • Assisting the Supervisor with inventory management, including Healthsource queue oversight and prioritization of urgent requests
  • Serving as a subject-matter resource for team members on ROI workflows, EMR navigation, SOPs, and best practices
  • Supporting client and internal escalations with timely follow-up and clear communication
  • Assisting with training and onboarding of new hires, including mentoring and coaching
  • Facilitating team training sessions and ongoing education to reinforce compliance and quality standards
  • Performing data entry, faxing, scanning, and other administrative duties as needed
  • Maintaining professionalism and effective communication with patients, providers, and clinical staff
  • Supporting overall team productivity and quality goals

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. (Must be from an Accredited Institute recognized by the State Dept. of Education.)
  • Willingness and ability to travel locally on a weekly basis as needed
  • Proficiency with computers, email systems, and standard office equipment
  • Strong understanding of HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism
  • Ability to stay organized while working quickly. Strong attention to detail is also required.
  • Passing annual Introductory HIPAA examination. (Testing to be given annually in accordance with employee review.)
  • Required to take and pass a 90-day ROI Certification course with a score of 85% or higher.
  • To ensure the safety of patients and staff, many of our clients require post-offer health screenings and proof and/or completion of various vaccinations such as the flu shot, Tdap, COVID-19, etc. Any requests to be exempted from these requirements will be reviewed by Datavant Human Resources and determined on a case-by-case basis. Depending on the state in which you will be working, exemptions may be available on the basis of disability, medical contraindications to the vaccine or any of its components, pregnancy or pregnancy-related medical conditions, and/or religion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in healthcare, medical records, HIM, or Release of Information (ROI) required
  • Supervisory or lead experience strongly preferred
  • Previous production/metric-based work experience
  • In-person customer service experience
  • Ability to build relationships with on-site clients and customers
  • Comfortable bringing new ideas, process improvement suggestions, and feedback to internal stakeholders
