Lead Grossing Technician

About the role

A self-motivated Lead Grossing Technician with strong technical expertise, leadership abilities, and a commitment to laboratory excellence. The ideal candidate will serve as a lead resource for the grossing team, assisting with workflow coordination, training, quality assurance, and daily laboratory operations while supporting compliance with all laboratory standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a lead technical resource for grossing staff regarding specimen handling, gross examination techniques, tissue sampling, and laboratory quality standards when the supervisor is not present.
• Coordinate daily grossing workflow assignments to maintain productivity, specimen integrity, and turnaround time expectations when the supervisor is not present.
• Work closely with pathologists, histotechnicians, laboratory technicians, supervisors, and laboratory management to prioritize cases and address workflow needs.
• Monitor and review gross descriptions, specimen processing accuracy, tissue submission quality, and workflow documentation to support accurate diagnosis.
• Assist with troubleshooting specimen-related issues, laboratory workflow concerns, and quality control matters.
• Act as a secondary resource to the supervisor by providing training, onboarding, technical guidance, and competency support for grossing technicians and cross-trained laboratory staff.
• Ensure compliance with laboratory procedures, CLIA regulations, OSHA requirements, safety protocols, and quality assurance standards.
• Assist with maintenance schedules, supply inventory management, equipment documentation, and laboratory organization within the grossing department.
• Collaborate with pathologists and laboratory leadership to improve workflow efficiencies and maintain high-quality laboratory operations.
• Assist with laboratory send-outs, slide and block requests, specimen tracking, and related laboratory functions as needed.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, productivity, and service excellence.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Demonstrated knowledge of specimen handling, laboratory procedures, quality control processes, and laboratory workflow operations.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Able to effectively train and mentor team members.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working with laboratory information systems (LIS) preferred.
• Knowledge of CLIA, OSHA, CAP, and laboratory compliance standards preferred.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in medical laboratory technology, or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university to include 24 science semester credit hours (6 biology, 6 chemistry, 12 any combination chemistry, biology and/or medical laboratory technology), or equivalent education and training.
• Prior anatomic pathology laboratory experience preferred but not required.
• Successful completion of a Grossing Technician, Histology, or Laboratory Science program preferred.
• Minimum of two years of grossing or related laboratory experience, preferably in dermatopathology, surgical pathology, or a high-volume laboratory environment.
• Education (preferred *allows advancement):
  • Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or
  • Have education and training equivalent to an associate’s degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology that includes:
    • At least 60 semester credit hours from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include all of the following:
      • 6 semester credit hours of chemistry
      • 6 semester credit hours of biology
      • 12 semester credit hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination

Work environment and physical requirements

• Laboratory environments may include exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, biohazards, or toxic substances.
• Daily activities may include standing, walking, sitting, bending, and lifting items up to 30 lbs.
• Frequent use of laboratory equipment and handling of patient specimens is required.
