Job Summary
Responsible for the gross examination and dictation of small surgical specimens and the performance of frozen sections. Responsible for the ordering, set up and preparation of tissue specimens for examination by Histology, Cytology and Pathologists.
Job Description
- Specimen Examination:
- Performs certain gross examinations as directed by the pathologist assistants and supervising pathologists, such as small surgical specimens.
- Produces accurate dictations using Dictaphone.
- Cut, stain, and coverslip frozen sections.
- Ensures specimen integrity by obtaining appropriate patient identification, data collection, specimen collection by using knowledge of medical terminology and Anatomy.
- Disinfect cryostats as needed.
- Rotate and change reagents on all Histology tissue processors as required and performs weekly Preventative Maintenance.
- Specimen Preparation:
- Prepares specimens and produce Thin Prep Pap smear slides using the Thin Prep 3000 or T2000 processor.
- Evaluate Non-Gyn specimens to determine the best method of preparation, produce high-quality Cytology non-gyn slides and determine appropriate cellblocks using approved method.
- Operates the stainer/coverslipper and operates the Thin Prep Imager and Cellient methods.
- Specimen Processing:
- Utilizes Health Information System & Lab Information Systems to process specimens, order and verify processing and billing tasks, receive transferred specimens, search EPIC for orders and print labels.
- Registers Ambulatory Patients in EPIC and releases provider orders in EPIC.
- Processes specimens, order and verify processing and billing tasks, receive transferred specimens, search EPIC for orders and print labels.
- Utilizes Health Information System & Lab Information Systems to process specimens, order and verify processing and billing tasks, receive transferred specimens, search EPIC for orders and print labels.
- Specimen Disposal:
- Disposes of surgical tissue, autopsy tissue, Cytology specimens, prepares limbs and fetuses for burial using appropriate PPE and chemical safety guidelines to insure a safe working environment.
- Specimen Documentation:
- Organizes specimen documentation, files slides, and billing info and communicates with reference labs: ERA/PRA, muscle biopsies, renal tumor protocol, GOG studies and slides for consultation to facilitate patient diagnosis.
- Professional Development & Training:
- Enhances professional growth and development of self, department staff, other hospital personnel, community and students by participation in continuing education, in-service training and the School of Medical Technology.
- Implements iCARE principles using communication skills and human relations to promote quality patient care and productive working environment.
- Quality Control/Quality Management:
- Reviews, documents and signs-off all Quality Control/Quality Monitor documents for AP equipment and processes.
- Maintains quality monitors within manufacturer guidelines and institutes appropriate corrective measures when needed.
- Equipment Maintenance:
- Troubleshoots and performs routine maintenance on all AP equipment, responsible for contacting Clinical Engineering or Technical Service when needed.
- Maintains file of all Service Call documents.

- Bachelor’s Degree in Science Discipline
