About the Role

The Lead Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and overhauling fleet vehicles in a timely and cost-efficient manner. This role ensures shop work is organized and assigned to the appropriate mechanic personnel in the Market Center location, focusing on quality control and preventative maintenance. Typically, a Lead Mechanic works in a market center location/shop with one or two additional mechanics.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain fleet vehicles with an emphasis on Preventative Maintenance programs to meet 100% compliance of standards.
  • Assist with scheduling and assigning work to mechanic or associate mechanic personnel.
  • Assess and recommend training needs for the fleet mechanic staff to either Regional or Group Manager.
  • Utilize the AVMS fleet management computer system for shop operation and tracking with a paperless system.
  • Manage cost control through purchasing, inventory management, and safety training to ensure vehicle assets remain within reasonable costs.
  • Maintain weekly cost data information and provide the Regional or Group Fleet Manager with the financial status of the shop and controllable vehicle costs.
  • Uphold the quality standards of the shop, cleanliness, and OSHA compliance. Regularly inspect vehicles to ensure they meet Vestis and Department of Transportation (DOT) standards.
  • Drive and reinforce quality standards in the shop and follow company workplace conduct policies.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the role to support the business.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of DOT regulations, vehicle maintenance, and applicable state vehicle laws.
  • Proficient in preventive maintenance control systems and in parts procurement and inventory control.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a collaborative and team-oriented environment in the shop.
  • Schedule flexibility to include days, evenings, and/or weekends.

Qualifications

  • 6 years or more of experience in all phases of fleet vehicle mechanical repairs, including general maintenance and repair, wiring, engine overhaul, and preventative maintenance scheduling.
  • Military maintenance experience is a plus.
  • High School Diploma or GED; VO-Tech Graduate; Associate degree in Automotive Technology or equivalent on-the-job training preferred.

Working Environment

Position is situated in a vehicle repair environment with exposure to varying temperatures depending on geographical location.
