Lead Field Service Technician
What You’ll Do
Lead testing and maintenance on LV to HV systems (480V–600kV), including breakers (air, SF6, vacuum), relays, cables, motor controls, and transformers
Run advanced diagnostics using Power Factor, Tan Delta, VLF, DC Hi-Pot, Doble, TTR, winding resistance, insulation resistance, and contact resistance tests
Perform and validate electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor relay testing
Oversee test plan execution and commissioning procedures for new systems, retrofits, and upgrades
Supervise onsite field crews—delegate tasks, mentor technicians, and uphold technical and safety standards
Enforce compliance with project specifications, Lockout/Tagout, PPE, and job hazard analysis requirements
Follow strict safety and PPE usage protocols due to noise, electrical hazards, and elevated work areas
Maintain accurate test reports, service records, and commissioning documentation
Serve as the lead field contact for clients—communicate status updates and coordinate project requirements
Oversee the care and readiness of test gear, vehicles, and tools
Direct emergency response, shutdowns, and start-ups with minimal supervision
Coach and support junior team members through on-the-job mentorship
The Experience We’re Looking For
10+ years of experience in power plant, utility, or industrial power systems
NETA Level III or IV strongly preferred; journeyman or equivalent advanced credentials also accepted
Expert-level experience with protection & control systems, relay testing, and high-voltage commissioning
Skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and PowerDB for documentation
Skilled in leading teams, delegating tasks, and making sound decisions under pressure
Thorough knowledge of NETA standards and safety regulations
Additional Requirements
- Willingness to travel at least 75%, including overnight stays and flexible scheduling
- High school diploma or GED required
- Valid driver’s license
- Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests
- Able to work outdoors in all weather, at heights (100+ ft), in confined spaces, and around high-voltage equipment and heavy machinery
- Physically capable of lifting 50+ lbs and enduring extended physical activity
- Requires good vision, hearing, and English proficiency for safe, effective communication in noisy environments

- NETA Level IV certification or recognized expert-level credentials
- Completion of a trade school program, technical college, associate degree, or skilled trade certification in welding or a related field
- Experience leading commissioning crews and mentoring junior technicians
- Deep familiarity with power plant environments and substation retrofits
