Lead Engineer - Grid Operations Technology (Hybrid Schedule)
About the role
Oversee the Company’s plans to modernize the design and operation of the electric distribution system. Lead multi-disciplinary teams through the full project life cycle—conception, regulatory filings, planning, implementation, performance measurement, and verification. Manage a team of engineers and analysts, ensuring accountability and professional development through performance management, mentoring, and coaching. Prepare reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders to secure approvals and provide project status updates.
Responsibilities
- Assign, prioritize, and review the work of engineers, analysts, vendors, and consultants.
- Serve as subject matter expert for grid modernization programs, including Volt/VAR Optimization (VVO), Fault Location Isolation and Service Restoration (FLISR), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and other advanced applications.
- Manage all phases of project implementation: technology review and selection, budget/scope/schedule definition, project justification, project management, reporting, tracking, and stakeholder engagement.
- Investigate emerging technologies, assess their relevance to the Company’s grid modernization strategy, and coordinate competitive procurement processes.
- Communicate grid modernization initiatives externally and participate in industry forums to advocate best practices.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture focused on accountability and continuous improvement.
- Lead and participate in cross-functional teams with IT, Operations, Engineering, Planning, and external partners.
- Lead design and execution of grid modernization initiatives related to operational technology platforms.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology (MS in Engineering or MBA preferred).
- Minimum of eight years in the technical, operational, or engineering aspects of the electrical utility industry.
- Thorough understanding of power system engineering concepts: power flow, voltage regulation, power factor, technical losses, and device coordination.
- Familiarity with modeling electric distribution systems (SCADA, DMS, OMS, power flow).
- Strong analytical, strategic planning, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to import and manipulate large datasets to quantify system performance, generate reports, and drive visualization.
- Frequent travel throughout the service territory in MA, CT, and NH.
- Must be available for emergency restoration assignments as required.
Prior supervisory experience preferred. Work is performed primarily in an office environment.
