Lead Electrical Engineer 2 - Mission Critical
This position allows for a hybrid arrangement with a mix of work from home and in the office.
About the role
Potential projects include designing one-of-a-kind, first-of-a-kind nuclear reactor facilities and particle physics laboratories. Project teams may consist of ten or more electrical engineers working within larger multi-discipline design teams. You will have the opportunity to be the technical lead of a project team, designing and analyzing new electrical systems supporting the development and testing of the next generation of nuclear science and research.
You will lead a team on challenging assignments, including designing electrical distribution systems and new facilities containing laboratories, testing, and research areas. This role involves solving a wide variety of unique electrical engineering issues, leading the development of electrical engineering deliverables (drawings, calculations, and specifications), and overseeing other engineers and designers in preparing engineering documents.
Responsibilities
- Act as the Electrical discipline lead in coordinating design phases for all aspects of site and facility electrical engineering work.
- Lead efforts to ensure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget.
- Coordinate design activities among other electrical engineers to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
- Interface with clients as the electrical discipline lead, providing status updates, preparing RFIs, and clarifying scope.
- Prepare and review detailed electrical calculations, including arc flash, voltage drop, fault current, and lighting analysis.
- Prepare documentation for design input for drawing production.
- Interface with vendors to prepare materials and equipment purchase specifications for client recommendations.
- Prepare reports and studies that present technical information clearly and concisely, meeting client requirements and S&L formats.
- Perform independent reviews of work performed by others, including calculations and drawing preparation.
- Develop your career via peer-learning through sharing knowledge with experienced engineers using S&L’s systems of process and “Communities of Practice.”
- Provide guidance as a mentor in the development of less experienced engineers.
- Lead others in using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
- Direct automation and process-improvement work, including how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation.
- Guide the use of AI or agentic AI tools while ensuring results are checked.
- Oversee engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen; dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify.
- Must be able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance.
- A BSEE degree from an ABET-accredited program is required; MSEE preferred.
- Must be currently licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the U.S. and able to obtain NM PE licensure.
- Must have or be able to obtain a DOE “Q” level clearance.
- 12+ years of experience (ideally in DOE, nuclear Navy, or NNSA) in the design of electrical engineering systems in a project team environment, with a focus on integrated, detailed system design for new plants or modifications/replacements for existing plants.
- Experience must include the selection of equipment, layouts, materials, and the preparation of calculations and specifications.
- Experience creating electrical system drawings and designs, including low voltage distribution systems (switchgear, transformers, generators, motors, UPS), and communication systems.
- 3+ years of experience leading an engineering design team through all phases of project design.
- Technical knowledge of available equipment and proven pre-engineered systems to execute systems design and integration.
- Experience serving as a firm/client liaison in a lead engineering role.
- Experience reviewing design media created by other engineers.
