This position allows for a hybrid arrangement with a mix of work from home and in the office.

About the role

Potential projects include designing one-of-a-kind, first-of-a-kind nuclear reactor facilities and particle physics laboratories. Project teams may include ten or more electrical engineers working within larger multi-discipline design teams. You will have the opportunity to be the technical lead of a project team consisting of engineers and designers involved in the design and analysis of new electrical systems supporting the development and testing of the next generation of nuclear science and research.

You will lead a team on challenging assignments that include designing electrical distribution systems and new facilities containing laboratories, testing, and research areas, solving a wide variety of unique electrical engineering issues. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading the development of electrical engineering deliverables, including drawings, calculations, and specifications, while overseeing and guiding other engineers and designers in the preparation of engineering documents.
  • Acting as the Electrical discipline lead in the coordination of design phases for all aspects of site and facility electrical engineering work.
  • Leading efforts to ensure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget.
  • Coordinating design activities amongst other electrical engineers to ensure installation and operations will comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Interfacing with clients as the electrical discipline lead, providing status updates, preparing RFIs, and clarifying scope.
  • Preparing and reviewing detailed electrical calculations, including arc flash, voltage drop, fault current, and lighting analysis.
  • Preparing documentation for design input for drawing production.
  • Interfacing with vendors to prepare materials and equipment purchase specifications for client recommendations.
  • Preparing reports and studies that present technical information in a clear and concise manner and meet client requirements and formats.
  • Performing independent reviews of work performed by others, including calculations and drawing preparation.
  • Developing your career via peer-learning through sharing knowledge with other experienced engineers by way of S&L’s systems of process and associated “Communities of Practice.”
  • Providing guidance as a mentor in the development of less experienced engineers.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen; dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify.
  • Must be able to obtain US Government security clearance.
  • A BSEE degree from an ABET-accredited program is required; MSEE preferred.
  • Must be currently licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the US and able to obtain NM PE licensure.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a DOE “Q” level clearance.
  • 10+ years of experience (ideally in DOE, nuclear Navy, or NNSA) in the design of electrical engineering systems in a project team environment, with a focus on integrated, detailed system design for new plants or modifications/replacements for existing plants.
  • Experience must include the selection of equipment, layouts, materials, and the preparation of calculations and specifications.
  • Experience with creating electrical system drawings and designs including low voltage distribution systems (switchgear, transformers, generators, motors, UPS), communication systems.
  • 3+ years of experience in leading an engineering design team through all phases of project design.
  • Technically knowledgeable of available equipment and proven pre-engineered systems to execute systems design and integration.
  • Experience with serving as firm/client liaison in a lead engineering role.
  • Experience in reviewing design media created by other engineers.

Skills

Valued but not required:

  • Construction and start-up experience.
  • Commissioning experience.
  • Experience using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in engineering workflow and processes.
  • Currently located in NM.
  • Experience overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs.
  • Additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows.

In this role, you are expected to lead others in using modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs. Leaders often direct automation and process-improvement work, including how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation, and guide when and how AI or agentic AI tools are used while ensuring results are checked.
