About the Role

Provide technical leadership and design of electrical controls and PLC programming for a diverse range of custom automated systems. The role requires a strong aptitude to grasp a wide range of processes and components, including:

  • PLC and associated ladder logic programs
  • Human-machine interface (HMI) and associated programming
  • AC motor controls (e.g., contactors and/or variable speed drives)
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic components
  • Electro-mechanical components
  • Pressure transducers, temperature transmitters, flow meters, level sensors, encoders, etc.
  • Proximity sensors, relays, pushbuttons
  • Machine safety: safety controllers, light curtains, scanners, guard door switches, etc.
  • Other standard electrical control components

The Controls Engineer will collaborate closely with the Project Manager, Systems Engineer, and Client to fulfill electrical control and programming requirements for each system. Responsibilities include establishing design concepts and budgets, executing design and programming, and supporting system technicians during the build phase.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical control systems for custom machines and perform PLC and HMI programming (Allen-Bradley or Siemens platforms).
  • Provide technical leadership and direction to cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Develop and present electrical control concepts to meet customer requirements, including written quotations.
  • Accurately estimate electrical control system costs, covering design labor, programming labor, build labor, purchased hardware, and commissioning.
  • Use AutoCAD Electrical or SOLIDWORKS Electrical CAD software to create, modify, or review electrical control designs (SOLIDWORKS Electrical preferred).
  • Collaborate with project teams and customer representatives to review and modify design functionality.
  • Support internal personnel and external suppliers during design and build phases by explaining design intent, overseeing progress, troubleshooting, and providing technical direction.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Take direction from the project manager and communicate effectively.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience designing electrical controls for custom systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with PLC programming.
  • Solid understanding of hydraulics (preferred).
  • Wire harness design experience (preferred).
  • Familiarity with CE and/or UKCA requirements (preferred).
