About the role

Mustang Cat is seeking an experienced Lead Dyno Technician to oversee engine testing operations at our Tomball Power Systems facility. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for directing daily test cell activities, supporting fellow technicians, and ensuring safe, accurate, and efficient testing of industrial natural gas and diesel engines. As the technical lead within the dyno operation, you'll play a critical role in delivering quality engine performance, mentoring technicians, troubleshooting complex issues, and driving continuous improvement throughout the testing process.

Responsibilities

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead daily operations within the engine test cell while promoting a culture centered on safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Dyno Technicians and shop personnel.
  • Assist with scheduling test cell activities to maximize productivity and minimize downtime.
  • Serve as the primary technical resource for complex engine performance and testing concerns.
  • Ensure testing procedures and documentation meet Mustang Cat and Caterpillar quality standards.
  • Partner with shop leadership to identify process improvements and implement best practices.
  • Support technician development through coaching, knowledge sharing, and hands-on training.
  • Promote accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement throughout the department.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Operate dynamometer systems to test industrial natural gas and diesel engines up to 2,000 horsepower.
  • Perform complete engine setup, calibration, testing, and post-test inspections.
  • Analyze engine performance using pressure, temperature, torque, emissions, vibration, and other operational data.
  • Utilize electronic data acquisition systems to monitor, record, and evaluate engine performance.
  • Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, fuel, cooling, lubrication, and control system issues.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting utilizing Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET), diagnostic software, and manufacturer service information.
  • Verify engine performance meets OEM specifications prior to customer delivery.
  • Support commissioning, validation, and final quality inspections of rebuilt and repaired engines.
  • Maintain test cell equipment, instrumentation, sensors, and support systems.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, hydraulic diagrams, wiring diagrams, service manuals, and technical specifications.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of testing procedures, repairs, and performance results.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Technical degree or formal training in Diesel Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Power Generation, or related field preferred
  • 5+ years of experience working with industrial natural gas or diesel engines
  • Previous experience operating engine dynamometer equipment
  • Proven experience troubleshooting complex engine and electrical systems
  • Strong understanding of engine controls, fuel systems, cooling systems, and electronic diagnostics
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and service literature
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced production environment
  • Commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and continuous improvement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience serving as a Lead Technician, Shop Lead, Crew Lead, or Technical Mentor
  • Experience with Caterpillar Large Bore engines
  • Experience supporting Power Generation equipment
  • Familiarity with Cat Electronic Technician (Cat ET) and Caterpillar Service Information System (SIS)
  • Experience with engine data acquisition systems and performance analysis software
  • Knowledge of emissions systems, engine calibration, and engine performance optimization
  • OSHA safety training or equivalent industrial safety experience
