Job Summary

About the role

Participates in and manages the cleaning process, supervises staff in routine cleaning, and polices grounds.

Responsibilities

• Plans, participates in, and oversees all custodial work, maintaining high standards of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
• Provides training for custodial staff.
• Performs minor maintenance such as replacing light bulbs, tubes, switches, outlets, ceiling tiles, or pencil sharpeners.
• Uses a power lift to perform tasks up to 40 feet.
• Complies with laws and procedures for storing and disposing of trash and waste.
• Maintains timekeeping records of custodial employees.
• Selects, assigns, schedules, and trains custodial staff.
• Orders custodial supplies using a computerized work order system, maintains inventory, and recommends supplies, tools, and equipment.
• Inspects work of other custodial staff and evaluates their performance.
• Promotes safety, health, and comfort of students and employees.
• Locks and unlocks doors; activates and deactivates alarm systems.
• Sweeps, mops, dusts classrooms, bathrooms, offices, hallways, and specialty rooms.
• Keeps building and premises neat and clean.
• Wipes, sanitizes, and cleans toilets, sinks, mirrors, countertops, windows, and water fountains.
• Empties trash and stocks paper products.
• Waxes floors, buffs carpets, vacuums, and cares for building carpeting.
• Washes windows and furniture.
• Picks up litter and debris on outside school grounds.
• Moves furniture, folds, and unfolds chairs as required.
• Checks heating and air conditioning for proper operation.
• Sets up and tears down for special events as needed.
• Submits work orders to Plant Services by telephone and/or computer.
• Raises and lowers flags; delivers packages and messages.
• Sends monthly light maps to Plant Services on the first Wednesday of the month.
• Loads and unloads delivery trucks.
• Performs minor repairs to equipment and furniture as needed.
• Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

Requirements

Considerable experience as a custodian in a school and some supervisory experience preferred.

Completion of a standard high school diploma or GED.

Trade school course or equivalent combination of experience and training required.

Thorough knowledge of proper procedures for cleaning and maintaining floors.

Ability to read and write in English and follow written and oral instructions.

Better than average attendance record and demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment.

Computer literacy.

Qualifications
