Duties And Responsibilities
- Ensures the building remains locked and alarms are activated.
- Plans, participates in and oversees all custodial work within the assigned building.
- Schedules, assigns, supervises, and inspects the work of custodial personnel.
- Provides ongoing training as needed in cleaning techniques and adheres to daily, weekly and periodic cleaning schedules.
- Manages inventory of cleaning supplies and oversees ordering, receipt, and distribution of custodial supplies.
- Performs routine custodial duties, such as emptying trash and dusting furniture, fixtures, walls, and equipment.
- Vacuums, sweeps, mops, and machine scrubs throughout the school building, to include hallways, classrooms, cafeteria, library, offices, and gym.
- Sanitizes cafeteria tables, water fountains, and restroom facilities, to include toilets, countertops, and sinks.
- Cleans windows and mirrors.
- Stocks paper products as needed.
- Checks building exterior and interior for cleanliness and possible damage.
- Maintains grounds and parking lot, clearing areas of paper and debris.
- Prepares buildings for special meetings and events.
- Moves furniture and sets up chairs as needed.
- Performs minor repairs and assembles furniture and equipment.
- Notifies supervisor or principal of broken or damaged items or areas that require a work order.
- Affords assistance in loading and unloading delivery trucks.
- Performs cleaning tasks as needed and/or assigned.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Extensive experience as a custodian.
- Thorough knowledge of the cleaning methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work, and the ability to use them safely, economically and efficiently.
- Ability to measure, handle, and label chemicals correctly.
- Ability to supervise school-based custodial staff.
- Ability to observe and report needs for maintenance and supplies, and perform routine maintenance tasks.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to get along well with students, officials, and the general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with fellow employees, school staff, and the public.
Physical Attributes
- Work requires regular lifting, stooping, bending.
- Sufficient strength, agility, and dexterity to perform all required tasks.
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and climate conditions.
- Ability to lift, move, transport supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with manual or mechanical assistance and utilizing appropriate safety gear as per OSHA guidelines.
Hazards/Unusual Demands
- Work requires exposure to cleaning liquids and other potentially toxic substances.
- Some cleaning activities may require exposure to blood, excrement, urine and other body fluids.
- Work involves some exposure to heat and dust.
- Position may require work during evening/night shifts.
- Sufficient strength, agility, and dexterity to perform all required tasks.
