Lead Custodian, Auxiliary Facilities Services

About the role

The Lead Custodian at UC Riverside's Auxiliary Facilities Services is responsible for leading, guiding, and performing various custodial/housekeeping tasks to ensure campus facilities are cared for, maintained, disinfected, sanitized, and preserved. This position involves cleaning, dusting, stripping, waxing, sweeping, mopping, polishing, disinfecting, sanitizing, vacuuming, replenishing restrooms, and removing refuse/recycling throughout campus facilities, conference rooms, elevators, stairwells, exteriors, etc. The Lead Custodian may work independently or as part of a team in assigned work areas.

Responsibilities

• Oversees critical day-to-day operations in supervisor's absence
• Acts as a subject matter expert and provides leadership to custodial/housekeeping staff
• Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty, and students

Requirements

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in custodial/housekeeping operations with an emphasis in floor care
• Experience in safe use of a wide variety of equipment and machinery common to custodial services
• Experience in safe use of cleaning chemicals and understanding their interactions, danger signs, and disposal methods
• Experience in proper procedures for cleaning and maintaining a variety of floor surfaces including, but not limited to, resilient tile floors, carpeted floors, and terrazzo floors
• One (1) year of experience leading or supervising custodial/housekeeping staff and operations
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in the English language with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to work a flexible schedule (weekends and holidays; early mornings, mornings, evenings, or graveyard shifts)
• Willingness and ability to work scheduled, unscheduled, and emergency overtime

Qualifications

• Basic knowledge in safe and proper procedures when hazardous materials are suspected
• Knowledge of safe and proper methods to clean up and dispose of biohazards and chemicals such as rodent droppings, vomit, blood, raw sewage, or chemicals
• Ability to read and understand the proper use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
• Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the job, including SB-198 Illness and Injury Prevention Program (IIPP)
• Knowledge of UCR/UC policies, procedures, and systems
• Knowledge and ability to use desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices
• Knowledge and skill to use MS Office programs and email
