About the Role

The State of Connecticut, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is seeking a qualified and experienced individual for the position of Lead Custodian to join the Building Services Department.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and coordinates daily crew workflow, setting priorities and overseeing task completion.
  • Supervises staff by scheduling, assigning, reviewing work, and providing training and guidance.
  • Establishes and maintains crew procedures to ensure consistent operations.
  • Performs and supports full custodial duties while ensuring adequate supplies and equipment.
  • Acts as liaison with operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures.
  • Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations.
  • May make recommendations on policies or standards.
  • May prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of experience in work that could reasonably be expected to provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a healthcare environment that operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
  • Experience supervising housekeeping or custodial staff in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience training and mentoring custodial staff.
  • Experience with the Joint Commission and Department of Public Health Environment of Care standards.
  • Experience interacting with surveyors and inspectors.
  • Experience with equipment such as floor buffers, carpet cleaners, and mops.
  • Experience stripping and waxing floors.
  • Experience with maintenance protocols in a healthcare environment including oversight of custodial operations, monitoring cleaning quality, and supporting quality assurance inspections.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

  • Knowledge of building custodial and/or housekeeping work and related equipment.
  • Interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate, care for and perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work; utilize computer software; supervisory ability.

Schedule

Full-Time (37.5 hours), 1st Shift, Wednesday - Sunday 7:00am - 3:00pm. Address: 287 West Street, Rocky Hill, CT.

Special Requirements

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

Physical Requirements

Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties. A physical examination may be required.

Working Conditions

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or assaultive and/or abusive patients or clients.
