Job Overview

Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest and leading organisations in the country for clinical trial activity involving medicinal products. Pharmacy has a key role in ensuring that clinical trial medications are handled safely and in line with UK legislation. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and well-motivated Pharmacist to join the Clinical Trials Pharmacy team.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide highly specialist advice and recommendations to other healthcare staff via telephone, e-mail and face-to-face.
  • Attend an initial Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course and subsequent refreshers.
  • Work with the clinical trials team and support cancer services to ensure compliance with UK legislative practices and Trust/departmental SOPs relating to clinical trials.
  • Contribute to audit of services both clinical and clinical trials related and act on the outcomes of these audits to change practice to improve services where appropriate.
  • Contribute to promoting cost-effective prescribing strategies and financially monitor drug usage within a specified area, providing reports on this when necessary.
  • Based in the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, which is part of the Freeman Hospital. However, may be required to work at one of the other Pharmacy Clinical Trials units within the Trust which includes the Freeman Hospital Clinical Trials office, which is based in the main Pharmacy department or the Royal Victoria Infirmary Clinical Trials Office.
  • Report to the Senior lead Clinical Trials Pharmacist and the Senior Lead Clinical Pharmacist – Cancer Services.
  • Accountable to the Senior lead Clinical Trials Pharmacist (Trust-wide).

Qualifications & Experience

  • Registered Pharmacist MPharm degree + post graduate pre-registration training.
  • Clinical Diploma (or equivalent higher qualification).
  • Extensive post registration experience in hospital pharmacy, some at a senior level.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Understanding of Clinical Trials legislation.
  • Knowledge of clinical research and its role in pharmacy and medicine.
  • Well-developed clinical pharmacy knowledge across all aspects of drug use.
  • Demonstrable awareness of developments in Hospital Pharmacy.

  • Ability to communicate, oral and written, specialist clinical information.
  • One to one communication.
  • Influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
