Job Summary
Aid management with store operations by performing clerk duties in designated departments (grocery or freight), leading by example, and assisting department managers in general department operations as directed. Answer customer questions and complaints in a professional manner and ensure all customers receive fast, friendly service. Perform duties of a grocery clerk, cashier, and/or freight stocker, as well as assist assigned employees in their tasks, including notifying them of breaks and lunches.
Typical Duties And Responsibilities
- Maintains and encourages an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis on taking care of the customer.
- Provides customer service by performing the duties of a clerk in the designated department (grocery or freight).
- Handles customer complaints and requests, approves checks, sells gift certificates, issues refunds, receives returned check payments, and answers customer questions.
- Monitors area activities, including customer traffic flow, checkout lane coverage, etc., and maintains cleanliness and eye-appeal of work area, storage areas, equipment, and retail displays.
- Ensures the department/area of responsibility is clear of excess carts, baskets, garbage, etc., and monitors arrivals, breaks, lunches, and departures of employees in the area.
- Communicates with immediate supervisor regularly and assists as needed or directed.
- Assists clerks by providing direction and leadership, demonstrating and performing clerk responsibilities and assigned tasks, and answering employee questions.
- Maintains a constant awareness of customer and employee safety, stocks and rotates merchandise in any area of the store as needed, and performs other duties as assigned or needed.
Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Communicating clearly and professionally, utilizing excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, establishing and maintaining a good rapport with co-workers, supervisors, vendors, customers, and others. Providing leadership, exhibiting interpersonal skills by maintaining composure and professionally addressing difficult and sometimes angry individuals including customers, vendors, and co-workers. Applying clear understanding of overall company practices, including in-depth knowledge of policies/procedures, in order to effectively judge and react to customer activity. Demonstrating initiative and self-direction to perform a variety of simultaneous skills (multi-tasking). Conducting visual inspections, reading reports, computer printouts, register and computer screens, etc. Performing basic math (add, subtract, multiply and divide) and computing weights and measures. Performing primary duties efficiently and accurately with honesty and integrity.
- Age: Must be at least 21 years old in Montana and Oregon, and 21 years old in all other states.
- Additional Requirements: Must be at least 21 years old, Food Handlers Certification (per state laws), proper use of cleaning chemicals in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines and instructions, proper handling of food products per state and county laws and WinCo standards, reaching, lifting and maneuvering objects up to 50 lbs. frequently, standing for long periods of time, walking and moving rapidly, bending, stooping, twisting and turning frequently, performing duties with mental alertness involving potential hazards with respect to related procedures, machines, equipment and work aides, understanding state & federal regulations if certification is needed, performing primary duties efficiently and accurately, and understanding overall company practices through previous experience in designated department (grocery or freight) or equivalent.
