About the role

The Department of Facility Maintenance, Public Building and Electrical Maintenance Division is hiring for a Lead Carpenter-Cabinet Maker in Honolulu. Work hours are Monday to Friday from 6:50 a.m. - 3:20 p.m.

Responsibilities

  • Construct walls, partitions, ceilings, floors, etc., during renovations and modifications to existing facilities.
  • Construct new wooden structures such as offices, meeting rooms, carports, storage sheds, etc.
  • Fabricate and install built-in cabinets, counters, shelving, bookcases, desks, work tables, doors, door frames, etc.
  • Remove and replace damaged or termite-eaten sills, floor joists, rafters, walls, partitions and all other portions of the wooden structures and apply termite treatment chemicals for spot treatment.
  • Read and interpret construction plans, specifications and sketches and determine materials needed.
  • Operate service trucks to transport personnel, equipment and tools to various work sites around the island to complete assigned jobs; operate forklift to unload, load and store materials.
  • Direct and inspect the work of helpers, apprentices or laborers.

Requirements

  • This position serves as a Disaster Response Worker and sometimes requires working beyond the normal workday, on weekends, and as necessary to meet schedules and deadlines.
  • This position is required to have unescorted access to the Joint Traffic Management Center (JTMC).

Qualifications

  • Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show demonstrated competence in performing the journey level skills and duties of a Carpenter-Cabinet Maker.
  • Such experience must have demonstrated the ability to apply the techniques appropriate to carpentry and cabinetmaking work; set up, adjust and operate a variety of woodworking machines; interpret and work from plans, blueprints, sketches and working drawings; prepare sketches of work details; estimate labor and material requirements; rig and work from scaffolds and other high and difficult vantage points; encourage safety practices and enforce safety rules; work to close tolerances; work with dexterity and safety; give and follow oral and written instructions; plan, assign and supervise the work of others; maintain harmony in working relationships with others; and handle weights and loads.
  • CABINET MAKING EXPERIENCE ALONE IS NOT QUALIFYING. EXPERIENCE MUST INCLUDE BOTH CARPENTRY AND CABINET MAKING.
  • Valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.
  • Valid Forklift Certification, prior to completion of probation.
