Lead Android Platform Engineer
About the Role
We are looking for a highly experienced Android Systems Engineer with deep expertise in building Android-based appliance products. This role focuses on the development, integration, optimization, and delivery of purpose-built Android devices where reliability, performance, security, and hardware/software integration are critical.
Responsibilities
- Architect, develop, and deliver Android-based appliance platforms for advanced video collaboration and embedded systems products.
- Work closely with hardware, firmware, platform software, application, QA, manufacturing, and partner engineering teams to ensure the complete system works reliably from bootloader and kernel through Android services and user-facing functionality.
- Solve complex system integration issues, guide technical decisions, review platform architecture, and contribute directly to high-quality production software.
- Develop and integrate Android-based software platforms for purpose-built appliance devices.
- Customize and optimize Android system behavior for dedicated appliance use cases, including kiosk-style operation, controlled user experience, device management, security, and reliability.
- Support Android platform bring-up on new SoC platforms and hardware designs.
- Drive platform stability, boot performance, recovery behavior, update mechanisms, and production readiness.
- Develop, debug, and maintain Linux kernel components for Android-based products.
- Work on device drivers for various hardware interfaces.
- Debug low-level system issues and analyze diagnostic data to isolate complex system failures.
- Provide deep technical leadership in Android multimedia subsystems such as Camera Framework, Display Framework, or Audio Framework.
- Design, develop, and debug Android HAL implementations and vendor services.
- Contribute to architecture decisions for new Android appliance platforms.
- Review partner designs and technical proposals.
- Mentor engineers in Android platform development, kernel debugging, HAL design, and system integration.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical field.
- 8+ years of experience in embedded Linux, Android platform development, or Android device software engineering.
- Strong hands-on experience building and shipping Android-based hardware products.
- Deep understanding of Android architecture, including framework, native services, HAL, vendor partition, system services, and boot process.
- Strong Linux kernel development experience.
- Experience with Android BSP integration and platform bring-up on SoC-based products.
- Deep experience in at least one major Android subsystem (Camera Framework, Display Framework, or Audio Framework).
- Strong debugging skills across kernel, native Android, framework, and application layers.
- Experience with Android build systems, AOSP, Soong/Make, Git, Gerrit, and CI workflows.
- Experience with SELinux policy development and Android security model.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams and external partners.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing Android appliance, video conferencing, smart display, collaboration, consumer electronics, or enterprise device products.
- Experience with multi-camera systems, video pipelines, ISP tuning, image processing, or computer vision workloads.
- Experience with audio DSPs, microphone arrays, beamforming, echo cancellation, or low-latency audio systems.
- Experience with various hardware interfaces (HDMI, USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, touch controllers, display interfaces).
- Experience with Android Enterprise, device management, kiosk mode, secure boot, OTA updates, and factory provisioning.
- Experience working with SoC vendors (Qualcomm, MediaTek, NXP, etc.).
- Experience with Android certification programs (CTS/VTS, GMS, etc.).
- Experience with performance tools (systrace, Perfetto, ftrace, etc.).
- Experience leading technical discussions with offshore teams, ODMs, JDMs, and BSP vendors.

Location
This is a hybrid position. The successful candidate is expected to work onsite at our San Jose, CA office 2–3 days per week, with the remaining days remote. Specific onsite days will be coordinated with your manager and team.
Compensation
This position offers an annual base salary typically between $168,000 and $240,000, depending on location and experience. In certain circumstances, higher compensation will be considered based on the business need, candidate experience, and skills.
