Probationary employee responsible for delivering law enforcement services throughout the County, including patrol, response to calls, arrests, criminal investigations, and civil process service.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol the County to maintain law and order.
  • Respond to calls for service.
  • Execute on-view arrests.
  • Check County businesses for security.
  • Respond to reports of criminal complaints and complete necessary investigations.
  • Deliver personal service of civil process issued by Harford County courts and other jurisdictions.
  • Execute arrests for all warrants issued.
  • Transport prisoners to and from penal institutions and courts in and out of Harford County.
  • Maintain courtroom decorum during trials.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen with 10 years of verifiable U.S. residency.
  • High school diploma or GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Valid driver’s license with no more than 3 points and no DUI convictions.
  • Pass entrance-level exam (minimum score 70%) with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Pass physical agility testing, comprehensive background investigation, criminal record check, medical exam, drug/alcohol screening, polygraph exam, and psychological screening.
  • Provide a handwriting sample for review.
  • Appear before and receive a favorable recommendation from an Oral Interview Board.
  • Visible tattoos permitted if not offensive, indecent, extremist, racist, or sexist; no visible tattoos on the face or head.
  • Must demonstrate honesty, reliability, integrity, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to act as a public representative of the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Working knowledge of the Annotated Code of Maryland, Harford County Ordinances, Uniform Traffic Code, Sheriff’s Office Rules and Regulations, and relevant court processes.
  • Skill in firearms use, defensive driving, and self-defense techniques.
  • Ability to complete Firearms Qualifications, Physical Training, Academic Standards, and other required training.
  • Ability to testify in court.
  • Knowledge of problem-solving techniques, grammar, spelling, arithmetic, and verbal/non-verbal communication.

Pay

Starting salary: $34.17 per hour / $71,074 annual. $10,000 recruitment incentive payment upon hiring and completion of required training academy. Opportunities for overtime, compensatory time, holiday pay, shift differential for evening and midnight shifts, and uniform allowance.
