About the Role

Provide legal support services for client divisions to work on various criminal and civil cases, enhancing efforts to combat crime and enforce immigration laws.

Responsibilities

  • Work with assigned client attorneys and/or supervisory attorneys to determine applicable administrative, statutory, and regulatory law, and identify possible defenses, violations, or causes of action.
  • Develop an understanding of all applicable federal, state, or local laws and stay updated on new criminal and civil rules and procedures. Alert client attorneys to potential issues while conducting reviews and analyzing case file data.
  • Oversee practice regarding 28 U.S.C. §2255 (habeas corpus) and immigration habeas matters, including:
    • Receiving and docketing matters.
    • Calendaring due dates.
    • Contacting appropriate client attorneys or support staff to locate files needed for drafting responses.
    • Preparing draft responses for review by the appropriate Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA).
    • Ensuring timely filing of responses.
  • Analyze statutes, legislative intent, judicial precedents, agency rules and regulations, and law review articles as they relate to assigned cases, including complex or unprecedented matters.
  • Support client attorneys by briefing them on pertinent facts, issues, and case law.
  • Draft correspondence and legal documents for attorney signature.
  • Draft proposed orders for signature by judges and magistrates.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) required.
  • At least two years of progressively responsible experience on litigation support projects or task-order-related projects.
  • Proven capabilities and communication skills to successfully interact with clients and attorneys.
  • Sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
  • Hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including:
    • Word processing.
    • Databases (e.g., document review and file management systems).
    • Spreadsheets.
    • Imaging.
  • Hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
  • Ability to obtain client’s Public Trust Clearance.
