About the role

The White Pine County District Attorney’s office is seeking a qualified and highly motivated Law Clerk to provide comprehensive legal research and analytical support to attorney staff. This is a limited scope position designed to provide practical experience to recent law school graduates as they prepare to undertake the requirements necessary to become licensed Nevada attorneys.

Responsibilities

  • Researches applicable legal and factual issues using computerized techniques and/or law library materials at the direction of an attorney;
  • Interprets and applies laws, court decisions and other legal authorities in the preparation of briefs, pleadings and other legal papers;
  • Drafts memoranda, motions and other documents related to specific cases or issues;
  • Researches and explains departmental, County and State procedures to attorneys and departmental support staff;
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the District Attorney's services to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team;
  • Maintains accurate records and files; prepares a variety of records and reports as assigned;
  • Uses standard office equipment, including a computer in the performance of the work;
  • May drive a personal or County vehicle in the course of the work.

Requirements

  • Minimum Qualifications: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school; OR Current enrollment in an accredited law school with completion of at least two years of study.
  • Experience: Experience in performing legal research and/or writing legal opinions or documents is desirable; Prior legal internship, externship, or clerkship experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Knowledge: Demonstrated experience in legal research and writing required; Knowledge of methods and techniques of legal research and investigation; Court procedure, applicable laws, codes and regulations, and rules of evidence; Computer applications, particularly as related to the performance of legal research; Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment; Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation; Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Skills: Identifying and analyzing legal issues presented in pleadings, motions, and evidentiary materials; Conducting independent legal research using statutes, case law, and electronic legal research tools; Applying legal principles to case facts and formulating well-reasoned legal conclusions; Preparing clear, concise, and well-organized legal memoranda, recommendations, and written reports; Presenting legal analyses and recommendations verbally and in writing; Listening carefully to oral arguments and discussions to identify underlying legal issues; Utilizing legal research software, word processing programs, and email systems efficiently; Operating standard office equipment, including telephones, calculators, copiers, fax machines, and scanners; Reading and interpreting safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance procedures, and policy manuals.
  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk. The employee frequently is required to stand; sit; reach with hands and arms; and perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Salary Range: $80,000 - $90,000
