Full-time, mid-level position in the Legal department supporting the legal mission of a large federal agency in Jackson, MS.

About the role

This position allows candidates to demonstrate expertise in providing litigation support tasks such as legal research, legal drafting, and administrative support to multiple attorneys. The role involves overseeing the USAO’s practice regarding 28 USC §2255 (habeas corpus) matters, including:

  • Receiving and docketing new motions
  • Calendaring upcoming due dates
  • Contacting appropriate AUSA/Support Staff to locate files necessary for drafting responses
  • Preparing draft responses for review by the appropriate AUSA
  • Ensuring timely filing of responses

Additionally, the role assists AUSAs with large-scale projects necessitated by new judicial precedent or federal legislation. Responsibilities include analyzing statutes, legislative intent, judicial precedents, agency rules and regulations, and law review articles related to assigned cases, including those of an especially complex or unprecedented nature.

Responsibilities

  • Support AUSAs by briefing attorneys on pertinent facts, issues, and case law
  • Draft legal documents for signature by the appropriate attorney
  • Draft proposed orders for signature by judges and magistrates
  • Work with assigned AUSAs and/or supervisory attorneys to determine applicable legal standards and identify the strongest arguments
  • Stay abreast of all applicable laws and new developments
  • Alert AUSAs to potential issues while working on case files
  • Perform other related duties within scope as assigned

Requirements

  • Law Degree (J.D.)
  • Licensed by a state bar
  • Valid United States driver’s license and dependable vehicle
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize law library resources and working knowledge of online research tools (e.g., Westlaw, Lexis/Nexis, CourtLink)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
