Latex Operator I Monday - Friday

This position operates Monday - Friday, 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM.

About the Role

To provide a continuous flow of secondary backing into the Coater and to monitor latex application on the secondary backing. Maintain the latex pump and tank area.

Responsibilities

• Maintaining continuous flow of secondary backing into Coater:
  • Remove wrap and roll ticket from roll.
  • Inspect backing for holes, tears, and cuts; ensure backing is not wet.
  • Align roll in cradle with yellow lines on the floor, ensuring correct direction.
  • When the previous roll is low (12-14” diameter), turn on J-box and run the remaining roll into it.
  • Notify the Operator (this is called "slack time").
  • Use the heat knife to trim the backing straight and cut it loose from the core.
  • Remove core inserts from both ends and place in core buggy.
  • Use the ultrasonic seamer to sew the end of the new roll to the old roll.
  • Check the seam for holes.
  • Move roll cradle forward, align core inserts, and lock down with T-handle locks.
  • Raise roll and align backing to get the seam onto the main tenter.
  • Dispose of scrap.
  • Record the length of the previous roll from Trumeter on the Backing Variance Sheet with roll number.
• Monitoring Tillotson Machine:
  • Ensure proper puddle volume.
  • Maintain tension on backing through the blade.
  • Maintain proper levels in the latex day tank and thickener tote.
  • Change thickener tote as necessary.
  • Maintain adhesive pumps and blenders; repair if needed.
  • Ensure proper application appearance.
  • Work with Coater Operator to prevent puckering or bagginess.
• Manage Froth Machines:
  • Make adjustments as needed.
  • Keep drainage ditches clean.
• Perform Viscosity Checks on Adhesive:
  • Set viscometer to: Power: On, Spindle Size: 07, Speed: 20 RPM.
  • Ensure spindle is clean and dry.
  • Record time, shift, line speed, injection ratio, and date on the froth viscosity chart.
  • Retrieve a 6-fluid ounce sample of latex.
  • Place the sample under the viscometer, aligning the spindle ring with the top layer.
  • Run the meter for 30 seconds, record the reading, and clean the spindle.
• Daily Clean-Up:
  • Maintain a clean work area at all times.
  • Sweep or blow down areas as needed.
  • Store equipment properly.
  • Keep grease and oil off the floor.
  • Check the recycling area.
• Painting:
  • Clean and paint assigned areas during downtime.

Requirements

• Must adhere to the Corporate Attendance Policy.
• Must notify the previous shift supervisor of an imminent absence 1 to 2 hours before shift change.
• Must work all scheduled work hours, including weekends, 12-hour shifts, and holidays as necessary.
• Physical Requirements:
  • Withstand temperatures of 100 degrees.
  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Change out adhesive overflow pan.
• Other Requirements:
  • Read and write legibly.
  • Operate coater console and wing controls.
  • Keep downtime report.
  • LTO certification.
• Training Requirements:
  • 2 weeks of on-the-job training.
  • Shaw Lift Truck Certification Course.
• Tool, Equipment, and Material Requirements:
  • Utility knife.
  • Hot knife.
  • Ultrasonic seamer.
• Safety & Security Requirements:
  • Kronos badge.
  • Safety glasses.
  • Ear plugs.
  • Cut-resistant gloves.
  • Goggles (for blowing out).
