CAREER DESCRIPTION
The Orange County Public Library (OCPL) has an opportunity for an individual experienced in a volunteer-based literacy program or comparable not-for-profit community services field to join OCPL’s Literacy Services Program. This is a 40 hour per week position which requires some evening and weekend work.
THE POSITION
The Staff Specialist-Trainer/Tutor Coordinator will work under the direction of the Literacy Program Administrator, administering and coordinating portions of a volunteer literacy program, including curriculum development, tutor training, assessment and data collection, community outreach and resource development relating to the specialty components of the literacy program. This position requires someone who is capable of multi-tasking, self-motivated, a strong communicator, and who functions well within a team environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Prepare, coordinate and conduct Tutor Training Workshops using the READ/OC Tutor Training Curriculum;
- conduct intake assessments of adult learners;
- trouble shoot tutor/learner challenges;
- assist tutors in preparing lessons for, evaluating, and tutoring adult learners;
- evaluate tutor monthly reports and periodically observe tutor/learner pairs during lessons;
- collect and analyze data relating to program statistics;
- Coordinate and schedule additional training for veteran volunteers and program participants in conjunction with Families For Literacy coordinator and EL Civics coordinator.
- Under certain circumstances, coordinate additional volunteers for outreach projects.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous training experience.
- At least 1 year experience working with volunteers.
- At least 1 year experience in volunteer literacy CBO or Library program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of:
- Specialized agency/departmental program functions and practices.
- General organization, purpose and functions of County government agencies/departments.
- Techiques for gathering, compiling, analyzing and presenting information verbally and in writing.
- Correct English usage for administrative writing requirements and oral presentations.
- Basic principles of mathematics including percentages, means, medians and other elementary statistical measures may be required of some positions.
- Ability to:
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, supervisors, managers, government officials, vendors and the public.
- Think logically and organize work priorities to accomplish work efficiently.
- Work independently.
- Generate enthusiasm and motivate others to act in support of a program's objectives.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
- Three years of experience which would demonstrate the knowledge and abilities defined above.
- Succesfully completed accredited college or university courses may be substituted for the experience requirement on the basis of three semester units or equivalent equaling three months of experience.
