Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC laser systems across multiple platforms and manufacturers;
- load programs, select lenses/nozzles, set fixtures, and handle material safely.
- Review work orders, prints, and job travelers; verify material type, thickness, grain direction (when applicable), and any special processing requirements before running parts.
- Perform machine set-up adjustments including focal point and stop locations; optimize parameters (e.g., power, speed, frequency, assist gas, pierce settings) to achieve required quality and throughput.
- Create, modify, and/or nest laser cut or engraving files from CAD drawings using approved software (e.g., CAD/CAM, TruTops, SigmaNEST, CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator); ensure correct orientation, kerf compensation, and feature accuracy.
- Maintain electronic file organization and revision control; verify the correct program/version is released and used for production.
- Monitor equipment support systems (e.g., chiller operation, process gases, filters) and track consumable levels; report low levels and coordinate reordering as needed.
- Conduct first-article, in-process, and final dimensional inspections using standard measuring tools; document results per quality requirements and identify nonconforming parts promptly.
- Troubleshoot routine machine and process issues (alarms, cut quality, dross, taper, misalignment, program errors) and escalate complex issues to Maintenance, Engineering, or Supervision.
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, cleaning, and daily/weekly checks per manufacturer guidance and internal SOPs; maintain maintenance and run logs.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate/associate degree in manufacturing, machining, or a related field preferred.
- 3+ years of experience operating CNC laser cutting/engraving/marking equipment (fiber, CO2, or similar).
- Experience setting up jobs, selecting optics/consumables, and tuning cut parameters to meet tolerance and finish requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, GD&T callouts, and work instructions.
- Proficiency creating or editing laser programs from CAD data using CAD/CAM or vector graphic tools (e.g., CorelDRAW/Illustrator) and maintaining file revision control.
- Working knowledge of quality measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges) and inspection documentation.
- Familiarity with laser safety standards, compressed-gas handling, and preventive maintenance practices.
- Experience with major laser platforms (e.g., TRUMPF, Amada, Bystronic, Mazak, or equivalent) preferred.
